Roxy, I think you mean you couldn't care less. Saying "I could care less" suggests you still care and could, in fact, care even less.

I thought Rocky blew, you enjoyed it. I respect that. Why you think anyone would have a huge party when it eventually closes though, is beyond me.

"I thought Rocky blew, you enjoyed it."

I missed the comma and really enjoyed this sentence.

(Not picking on you at all Mr Roxy - just reminded of this Soapbox rant by David Mitchell from Sutton's post. If it's not your cup of tea then he does plenty of others worth checking out in this series. Plus i thought ALL Americans used this expression. Guess I was wrong)

"Plus i thought ALL Americans used this expression. Guess I was wrong"

To be fair, a lot of Americans do use it. But usually, they use it when they are saying they don't care, but actually do, so they technically are using it accurately, just not on purpose.

"I thought ALL Americans used this expression."

God no, please don't ever think that! Most people actually know the correct expression.

Noted - I'm sure David Mitchell (and obviously The Queen) will be glad to hear of it! How does one stand on "Hold down the fort?"

I used to work in Harvard Square and whenever I'd tell someone I'd "give them a ring" later I got some very puzzled looks... 'Two nations divided by a common language' and all that.

Apologies for going off topic - though I agree with previous comments. I hate this speculation on closing notices stuff. But I fear we've been here before.. (And Sutton, you basically told me to fu@k off then!)

I think we were talking about Bridges of Madison County? I apologize for that, but I am really defensive when anyone says anything negative about it. I'm still bitter, what can I say?

Yes, I hate the expression "Hold down the fort". I mean, WTF?

No need to apologise. I obviously just pushed your buttons - though I wasn't saying anything negative about it. Quite the reverse.. And it was great to see what an amazing show of support that it received in it's final weeks. Well, unless you're After Eight that is.. But I'm assuming that's down to a serious case of IBS

Not sure if that's a question or a statement, but they did work on it for years. So, perhaps they wanted to make the exact show that is currently on Broadway? And that show didn't connect with as many people as N2N? I still think by setting a higher bar (original story, original music, etc.) they are setting a higher bar than shows with some built-in audience appeal (previous movies, known music, etc.), so I still think it is better to have people who aim high and arguably miss than aim low and shoot bullseye after bullseye.

I thoroughly enjoyed Rocky. It is a very good show. I have seen if several times and have seen the changes they made to improve it from the preview opening till the actual opening night. The cast is wonderful, especially Andy Karl and Margo Seifert. They are both giving stellar performances night after night. Andy Karl deserves to win the Tony tomorrow night. This role is a career defining performance for him. Unfortunately Neil Patrick Harris is most likely to take it home because he is so well liked in the Broadway community and he is a Hollywood Star. It is all politics and favoritism, a popularity contest. The best doesn't always win.

Isn't all politics a popularity contest? Whoever gets the most votes, wins. Sometimes, it's the guy you're rooting for? Sometimes, it isn't. And whoever 'deserves' the Tony (or any prize) is always gonna be a subjective call. Andy Karl is giving a career-defining performance. So is Neil Patrick Harris. And so did Steven Pasquale, and he didn't even get nominated. As for Harris taking home the Tony because he's a Hollywood star, that sure didn't work for Tom Hanks last season. Nor did it even get Daniel Radcliffe or Denzel Washington nominated for Best Actor this season. Is Harris popular for hosting the Tonys? You bet. And he won Emmys for it. But did he also give a knockout performance in 'Hedwig'? Read his rave reviews. Whether Harris or Karl ... or Karimloo or Pinkham or Mays win, each would be deserving. But only one can win, barring a tie.

All you have to do is check the sites that sell tickets and see how future dates are selling. None of the shows were nominated for Best Musical which is one nail in their coffins. All are on TDF and other discount sites-another nail. Bullets has the balcony closed at the St. James, If/Then has plenty of available seats for the summer, and Rocky has been stuck with the same losing grosses since previews. They may get a bump from the Tony performances. They all have very wealthy producing teams who may be willing to lose money to save face. But OP may have a point.

"Bullets has the balcony closed at the St. James"

While there have been a handful of performances where the balcony patrons have been moved downstairs in the past few weeks, your statement is untrue.

The balcony is closed? So, they move people down and close off the balcony? Sales are that slow?

I don't think Neil Patrick Harris should have been nominated for Hedwig as an actor in best musical nor should Audra McDonald for best actress in a play for Lady Day. Both shows are Cabarets, not a musical or a play. They dont fit in either category. Both shows should also be off Broadway. It is only their names that got them a Broadway house. I do know that both have received numerous accolades and will most likely win tonight.Three years ago when Hugh Jackman did Back on Broadway They gave him a special award as his show didn't fit in either category, but they wanted to acknowledge him as he has done so much for the Broadway community. That is what they should have done with Neil and Audra.

"They all have very wealthy producing teams who may be willing to lose money to save face."

I don't think there is much evidence of this. Once a show starts bleeding money, face is not a concern. A show might get helped along through Tony nominations (ala Bridges), and then through the Tonys if nominated, but a struggling show with no Tonys will sort out a closing date once those milestones pass.

I can't think of any examples to the contrary. A show may not have much hope of earning its money back, like Spiderman, but as long as it is earning more than its weekly nut, it can stay open.

Denzel should have been nominated. He was definitely robbed. He was fabulous in Raisin. Daniels show was more of an ensemble piece, but he has been snubbed three times. He deserved a nomination and a win for Equus. Stephen Pasquale also definitely deserved a nomination for Bridges.

Has someone without movie or TV credits ever been snubbed by not getting a Tony nomination?

"Both shows should also be off Broadway."

Huh? When a show is guaranteed to be successful on Broadway, why on earth would they put it Off Broadway? It's a business and they want to make as much money as possible.

"I don't think Neil Patrick Harris should have been nominated for Hedwig as an actor in best musical nor should Audra McDonald for best actress in a play for Lady Day."

Then you apparently didn't see their performances.

I actually saw both shows as i have ssen pretty much everything on Broadway. The ONLY reason those shows were on Broadway, as you said, was because of who the stars are and they are guaranteed to make money. They will sell the tickets and bring the people in. The shows themselves are not Broadway material. If anyone else was in either show they would have been off Broadway.
I meant the shows being in the categories they were. i don't know if either qualified as a play or a musical. They were both more like a cabaret. I thought Audra did a phenomenal job in Lady Day even tho i don't have alot of knowledge of Billie Holliday. Regarding Hedwig, I never saw it off Broadway, didn't know there was a movie and didn't realize it had a cult following like Rocky Horror. It just wasn't my taste. Neil did do an amazing job for what it was.
It doesn't matter now. Its over and they both won. The prognosticators were correct on both counts.
