"By that logic, Bullets should be nominated as it has new lyrics to a number of songs."

Were the new lyrics for Bullets included in songs which were written exclusively for the theater production?

No. BULLETS' entire score is pre-existing songs, but some of the lyrics have been changed to fit the show, hence the point of that post in this thread.

I don't know if the committee looks this closely, but I wonder if they consider the reprises as old music and new lyrics -- i.e., count the music and lyrics separately when determining the amount of new material.

I really wish I knew how the committee (and it was the administration committee that made the call, NOT the nominating committee, although obviously the nominating committee chose to nominate it) came to its conclusion.

I thought that in a case like this, only the new material could be considered in voting, but someone else said that if the score is deemed eligible, then the ENTIRE score (even the preexisting material) could be considered. Anyone know for sure?

RSRichie, If/Then *is* nominated for score. Careful.

I don't think Aladdin should be nominated since many of the "new" songs aren't new at all, like "Proud of your Boy" which was written for the original film, just cut and readded. However, they're going by precedent, which is that Little Mermaid was nominated for score. Even though it's a slightly different case.

Do a new song and its reprise count double when it comes to finding the ratio of new to pre-existing material? That seems silly.

But silliness is nothing new, nothing unexpected, when it comes to tony rules. It is what it is.

Since Ashman is indeed cited as one of the contributors to Aladdin's score on the official nomination, it does seem that the entire score is being considered.

Ooh yeah, that's a good point.

Another thing that I forgot, for Prince Ali, they added the full version back into the musical, including "There's no question this Ali's impressive, though his entourage might be excessive, all those elephants at once might quite unnerve one", etc.

Also, the Sultan gets a reprise of Prince Ali, also, which is a new song.
