the million moms press release is a hoot. Billy Porter is identified as RuPaul, and the objectionable lyrics are the following

"Celebrate you to elevate you!

Ladies, Gentlemen, and those who have yet to make up their minds.

Instill the truth… learn something new.

Accept yourself and you'll accept others too.

Let love shine… let pride be your guide.

Change the world when you change your mind.

Just be who you wanna be.

You're beautiful; it's beautiful!

They found the performance "sexually charged"? They saw "hooker boots"? Look who's calling who inappropriate! Please ladies, keep your fantasies to yourselves.

I have to say, it's not really fair to say the right-wing decries the KINKY BOOTS performance or especially that the "right wing decries that they are morons."

Personally, I'm pretty conservative. So what. I enjoyed the performance on the parade, I enjoyed MATILDA with Bertie as Miss Truchbull (well to say enjoyed is underrated because I thought he was phenomenal), and I admire anyone who has a great talent and the courage to share that with the world. Politics be damned, I love the theatre.

Very fair point. Not all conservatives agree LGBT people need to be excluded from the Thanksgiving parade. But some do, and have been quite vocal in expressing their opinions. For precisely that reason, it is incumbent upon every decent conservative to dissociate him or herself from this homophobic bigotry. I haven't yet seen a dissenting press release and petition from conservatives in support of Macy's inclusion of LGBT characters in the parade. Maybe that'd be a good idea.

The bigoted press release above doesn't even have the guts to admit what they hate and fear about Kinky Boots's inclusion in the parade was its LGBT-inclusive message, so they assert that nonsense about it having "sexual" and "hooker" content (it had neither). In fact, it's far less sexual than many Barbie Dolls and children's films. Harvey Fierstein was previously taken to task on this board for NOT making Lola more sexual!

The first task of a bigot is always to make bigotry sound like morality. The first response of decent people -- liberal or conservative -- is to call them out and stand up against prejudice. That's how to protect kids.

Thank you. The only reason conservatives are associated with homophobia is because Jerry Falwell, Anita Bryant, and Karl Rove attached social wedge issues ("God, guns 'n' gays") onto their political ambitions. They only succeeded because voters let them.

One wondes how many gay kids these self-annointed "million moms" need to see bullied or take their lives before they feel their own families are safe. It's time for good moms -- Democrat and Republican -- to stand up against such hateful nonsense.

Devoting an entire thread to them and their views certainly doesn't help. Just like we do with trolls on BWW, I strongly recommend "ignoring" them. Do not give them the attention or press...

"I strongly recommend 'ignoring' them."

And just cede the microphone to them? No way. This thread exists because their hate, aimed at the televising of a theatrical performance, trended on Twitter. NBC, Macy's, and the Republican Nominating Committee were watching. Wishful thinking doesn't make bigots and bullies go away. Standing up and speaking out does. It's exactly what this board is for.

but isnt that like saying all Liberals and Progressives are God Hating Heathens because of actions of some? Like the whole Christmas Tree must be a Holiday Tree... God We Trust should be removed from Money, God should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance and the Oath of Office. i know many obviously religious Progries and lefty libs

WHat you are doing is stereotyping the way they do. Two wrongs do not make right

I agree with you TBF. All the people who claim they are not like all the worst and most evil conservatives need to put their money AND their mouths where they claim their "real beliefs" lie. If you are against homophobia, you tell the elected officials in your district who are behaving that way that they need to stop. And you need to keep telling them until they stop.

It's all very well and good for "compassionate conservatives" to stir their tea as they assure us they disagree with so much of what the party they support stands for but until they take ACTION, they are collaborators.

"And just cede the microphone to them? No way. This thread exists because their hate, aimed at the televising of a theatrical performance, trended on Twitter."

Did this really trend on Twitter? It seems to me that Huff Po just assembled one of its trademark cut-and-paste lazy articles, by finding a bunch of people who complained and making it into a story. You can tell they went looking for this angle, since more than half of the people have since had their tweets removed from the article because they were read with the "outraged" slant HuffPo had already decided for this story.

One Million Moms (all 60,000 of them) only jumped on the bandwagon that HuffPo's lazy journalism made easily available to them.

Posting on Twitter isn't using a microphone. It is just a bathroom wall. Until we then turn their nonsense into a cause, by sharing it, posting it, etc., or reward lazy journalism for cutting and pasting their way to online ad revenue.

Being quite never solved anything. It's like those stupid NO N8 campaign photos with the people with duct tape over their mouths.

Silence=Death

And it's not just for AIDS, it's for anything.

"Did this really trend on Twitter?"

According to Twitchy, yes, it really did. Multiple independent news organizations reported that.

"Posting on Twitter isn't using a microphone… until we then turn their nonsense into a cause by sharing it."

I wish this were true. Unfortunately, in much of the world, simply being gay is legal grounds for being silenced, imprisoned for life, or put to death (see map linked below, also in a related thread). This did not happen because concerned people spoke out; it's because they didn't.

When the conservative right -- influential in this country for 40 years -- starts pressuring NBC and threatening Macy's (who decide what's in the parade) for televising theatrical performances with images of LGBT people on Thanksgiving, it's time to speak out without hesitation. If we don't, prepare to see theatrical performances depicting them quietly disappear from future broadcasts.

The U.S. is a global beacon of human rights. Our freedom of expression in art is a reflection of our values.

Since when did "ignoring" equate to being silent on an issue? I'm not suggesting that you ignore the bullies and just hope they vanish. That would be promoting willful ignorance and naiveté, which is just as dangerous as the hate they spew.

I'm suggesting that you take real action and be proactive on the issue by discussing what we can do to respond to this and counter their big push. It's possible to do that while refusing to give the Million Moms, and all others, this exposure and press. That applies to you, BWW, and all of the media. Why give them the attention?

It's exactly the same as a certain Russian troll on here who makes inflammatory comments to gain attention. The best thing to do is fight against that while not giving any it any of that attention it is so desperately seeking.

The so called million moms is actually far less than 100,000 sows who wish for a fictoonalized, white-washed 1950's society that never really existed to begin with. They are a scourge, and are today, mostly ignored, except by bigots who share their same ass backwards views.

"When the conservative right -- influential in this country for 40 years -- starts pressuring NBC and threatening Macy's (who decide what's in the parade) for televising theatrical performances with images of LGBT people on Thanksgiving, it's time to speak out without hesitation."

You're twisting the timeline around on this, I believe.

As I understand it, some random idiots posted on Twitter in real time. Then, HuffPo cut and paste their latest "article" to attract attention. Then, people who support Kinky Boots/equal rights shared this post. And once the article started attracting attention/getting shared/trending did the actual right wing groups sign on, and at that point, it was just free publicity for them to join in, so why not.

So, you're making quite a leap by jumping from my point, which was to not share dumb articles like this, which would prevent them from having the buzz that then makes them into issues, to saying it should be ignored now. Now that we made it into an issue, we have to deal with it. But I do think we were the people who helped get it on the right wing's radar, and now say we have to fight it.

I'm just saying we can choose to not get it on their radar in the first place and then not have to defend it after it lands there.

That is the timeline as I saw it unspooling. The groups came after HuffPo and everything else. They didn't start it, AFAIK.

And not just on Twitter, but also on Youtube- I posted the performance right after they performed and among the 30,000 views it's got, there were TONS of comments regarding the performance. I don't normally delete comments, but some of them were soo downright disgusting and soo over the top that I had too.
