Doris Day has been offered an Honorary Oscar twice when it was still a part of the main event, but she turned them down. It's not obligatory to accept the award in person, but you still have to agree to be presented with one, otherwise what's the point?

Maureen O'Hara is definitely worthy! She's never even been nominated despite so many memorable screen performances.

Regarding accepting, the same thing happened with Peter O'Toole. They wanted to honor him as much as a decade ago, and he kept turning it down. Finally, he said yes, and they gave it to him.

I wish Doris would change her mind. She has accepted other lifetime achievement awards in the past.

I suppose the offer of awarding it to her is almost as good as actually getting it. At least she knows she's appreciated! (Unlike Maureen O'Hara...)

Re: the telecast, I believe there's still an in-person acknowledgement of the honorees during the telecast even if they don't get to make speeches there. But, yes, agree that it would be great to have them present. And in fact, Martin, Jolie and Lansbury would probably be on a shortlist of presenters any year anyway.

As for the speeches. A couple of quick reactions:

Martin Short -- Man that was hilarious and unrelenting. I hope he comes back to Broadway soon.
Steve Martin - Both very funny and deeply felt. Lovely speech.
Angelina Jolie - Lovely speech. Well rehearsed, but delivered beautifully

Robert Oscborne - I'm grateful for all that Osborne does to preserve film history, but that speech for Ms. Lansbury was a bit of a let down; especially when he kept emphasizing that she was dissatisfied with her film career. Of course, anyone who follows her career knows this, but this was not the time or place to discuss that, this was a celebration of her work in film. Shame that he took this tact.

Emma Thompson - She usually gives fantastic speeches at these things (see her Oscar and Golden Globe acceptance speeches or her tribute to Mike Nichols at the AFI event). Unfortunately, even her speech fell a bit flat. Basically, Angela Lansbury is a great artist because she let Emma Thompson hit her with a pie? I know what she was going for, but that speech could have used a better anecdote -- maybe one Emma was given second hand.

Geoffrey Rush - wow was he plastered. And unprepared. He recovered nicely when he talked about the wide versatility of her roles -- that was lovely, but the rest was just a bit of a ramble.

Ms. Lansbury - elegant, graceful and unaffected. Class act. I think she could have used a stronger finish for her speech given that she ended with Murder She Wrote, undoubtedly one of the biggest parts of her career, but nothing to do with her honor. Still, how absolutely lovely to see her finally get her Oscar.

I really liked Mr. Oscborne’s speech and you could see that the man has nothing but admiration for the lady and is truly happy for her.

Ms. Lansbury’s speech was lovely and very touching. I just wish she would’ve used this opportunity to let people know that she would’ve love to be back in films in a great juicy part.

Here’s a bit from Dame Maggie Smith’s speech that she gave last Sunday while accepting the London Evening Standard Theatre Icon Award:

"I'm very sad because I haven't done anything in theatre to justify this. I wish I had. Doing something on stage at the National the other night was extraordinary. I would love to do more theatre work but really, I don't get any offers. I'm with my agent here and I'm told I'm busy for the next year, but after that I would love to do more work on the stage. If you could help me put the word out, maybe that would help! Maybe you could put an advert in for me."

While Dame Maggie, surprisingly, facing difficulties getting work on stage, Angela Lansbury, who is one of the most sought after stage performers out there and can get pretty much every role she wants.

However, she can’t land a decent film or TV role for years; even though she has mentioned numerous times that she would’ve love to play another great film role. If someone like Woody Allen or Stephen Frears would offer her a role in their movie I can totally see her adding another Oscar to her honorary one.

Speaking of Geoffrey Rush, why not to cast Ms. Lansbury as Mrs. Tottendale in The Drowsy Chaperone movie?
