UGH! I wish the digital release was earlier! I absolutely adored this show. I can't believe I waited until the final performance to see it, but I think that made the experience all the better. Which also tends to make me think that no matter how good the recording is, it won't even come close to topping that evening. I'm still buying it though :)

Will those of us not too familiar with the show who haven't seen it live still be able to get the full impact of the score?

If you know the basic setup of the show, I think you'll be able to figure out how the songs fit in the story.

I'm looking forward to hearing this score again!

At first I was concerned about what the "(uncontrollable laughter)" track (or however it's styled, appropriately) would sound like, but I'm actually really pleased by the snippet of dialogue in that iTunes preview. It's a nice reminder of how organic the show's storytelling felt. The strengths of the show to me were the music and the folksy, unglamorous characterizations of the cast. The wonderfully imperfect vocals of Dale Soules, Keith Carradine, and much of the company were very refreshing after many auto-tuned spectacles and razzle-dazzle blockbusters.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Mine was shipped last week. Excited to get it, hoping tomorrow.
I was a big fan of the music, but the samples on iTunes don't impress me. Sounds like they changed it a bit. Took out the originality and soul in favor of more country twang.

Particularly the finale, which impacted me so much, sounds so low key.

"This OCR should come with a warning...Do not operate heavy machinery while listing to this CD!!!"

...because you're enjoying it too much to pay attention to the heavy machinery.

Any word on a signing?

Wow just from the preview tracks alone is really getting me pumped. I never seen the show at all so I don't have a say in it but I feel like it deserved a better run than what we got.

Chris, if you do feel that way about the score then that's perfectly fine, but I think that Lestat is FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, WORSE. I'd rather have these songs anyday of the week.

Why is it that Ghostlight Records get the BEST cast recordings along with PS Classics?

So looking forward to finally hearing this great score again :)

As I asked before - is anyone willing to nab me a signed copy at B&N?

I just downloaded the cast recording on iTunes. Really enjoying it so far. I saw the show once and was in the minority, enjoying it. This cast sounds great singing the score...Especially Jay and Allison.

Correction - the minority opinion has proven to be those who disliked it.

^Agreed. Although, I'm not really sure what could have happened differently to give the show a longer run. The Times review had some nice things to say. I liked the marketing campaign. People just didn't show up. It's a fun cast recording though.

I am still amazed no one in the marketing team thought to do an acutual Hands on a Hardbody contest in Time Square.

The recording is so good. I'm so glad this show got a recording. I saw it right before they announced it was closing and regret waiting that long to see it.

I've had a chance to listen to this and I must say I'm a little let down. Maybe it's the nature of how the song is performed but "Joy of the Lord" sounds kind of flat in the recording. I also wished they kept in "SHUT THE F*CK UP" if they were going to include the laughter.

Also I don't need "The Tryers" as a bonus track. Was so glad when that got cut.

Yeah, I really wish the "SHUT THE F*CK UP!" with the following dialogue would have been included, as well.

ClydeBarrow, I disagree. "Joy of the Lord" is one of my absolute favorite tracks on the disc! I haven't seen the show (but TUTS Underground is doing it next summer in Houston!!!), so I can't comment on the missing dialogue. However, I love Keala Settle's singing of the song. It really reminds me of the original film, which is why I love it so much! I think it's very joyful and very true to the nature of that type of music in Texas. I hear people sing songs like that with a relative frequency. Her rendition sounds like what I'm used to hearing, especially when I'm in smaller towns.

Regarding "The Tryers," I can't comment on it in performance; however, I burned a copy of the CD with the song placed where it belongs in show order and I like it. I enjoy the track. I'm glad they included it.

Great article in the U-T San Diego about the cast album (the show was commissioned by the La Jolla Playhouse and the writer was very partial to the show...he and I were commiserating regularly during the run that it wasn't selling and wouldn't make it to the Tonys)
'Hardbody' lives on in song
