"I'm shocked by Laura's voice. She lost that nasally whine she had all through Bonnie and Clyde. She sounded terrible in that show."

I love it when people make comments like this about singers in contemporary musicals - it's like people don't get that each of those singers were trained classically and the 'nasal whine' that they have is a stylistic choice which younger listeners (myself included) enjoy. Gorgeous. I must have it. Even a better experience than seeing the show. Beautiful.

What happened to "Now Is The Time"? Was that recently cut? Does the character of Jean-Michel even serve a purpose now?

"Listen to "The Prince Is Giving a Ball.""

Ok, thanks! :) I haven't listen to them yet. I was just going by the song list. Sorry, my mistake!

And the campaigning continues…they sure are putting up a good fight for that TONY. I wonder if producers are concerned that they're pushing "First Time On Broadway" and that they just got a "Best Revival" nomination? Is that not confusing in regards to marketing?

I love the warmth that comes from a Rodgers and Hammerstein score done well. The orchestration and the ensemble's portion of the Prologue are just exquisite.

Thanks Wynbish!! Great article!

After reading this though...

"taking French leave" is leaving a gathering without saying goodbye and thanking the host; "French letter" is an archaic nickname for a condom; “French kiss” implies the gratuitous use of the tongue; and herpes used to be widely known as the “French disease.”

.... i may not want to indulge in all things that are "French"!

LOL at ATC, two people are saying that the arrangements are shrill and charmless compared to Carousel.

What do those fools know?

^I think this version is shrill and charmless compared to the last tour with Eartha Kitt, but what do I know?

I do like the way they incorporated Loneliness of Evening, but I could have done without "Now is the Time" (which is still heard in the underscore of South Pacific) and all the revolution bs.

Honestly listening to it brings me right back to that theatre, 5th row of the Orchestra dead center. Gorgeous score and orchestrations.

I must admit that when I read the first comment my thought was that in BONNIE & CLYDE she was using a "character voice." But, Reggie, can you explain why you prefer it to a regular voice?

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Sue, a condom was known as a "French letter" in English for decades. I don't know why except for the English tendency to blame everything sexual on the Latins.

Has "I Have Loved and I've Learned" cut? I loved it when I saw it.

I think that the recording sounds wonderful. Does the feed stall for anyone else in the middle of songs though?

And frontrowcentre, not to answer for Reggie, I would say that it isn't so much an issue of a "regular" voice but rather of what genre of music is being sung. Bonnie and Clyde has a popish score, so therefore the more pingy (bright, focused) belt (some people construe it as screaming or whining, which with all do respect is just incorrect) is appropriate, where a more rounded classical sound is appropriate for Cinderella.

This recording is so lush, absolutely gorgeous. All of the performers, including the ensemble and the orchestra, sound sublime. I ordered the CD right after listening to it and added Laura Osnes' new solo CD to the order just for good measure.
