2 Things:

1. New Criterion titles announced

Lady Snowblood

Bitter Rice

The American Friend

Inside Llewyn Davis

Gilda

2. Just watched the new Spartacus restoration and it looks absolutely incredible if anybody was on the fence about buying it.

Some good movie musical bargains on Amazon right now for Blu-ray ...

$7.99 (lowest price yet) for:

Oklahoma!

Rocky Horror

The King and I

South Pacific

Fiddler on the Roof

Of those, Oklahoma! and South Pacific both have fantastic new restorations and are well worth the upgrade. The King and I has that horrible blue tint and gets a very poor score for the video, but the audio is great. Rocky Horror looks and sounds great too if you don't already have it.

Bestie;  Is there a new  King And I restoration in the works?  Or is this the best it will  be?

This one just came out, and I have heard no plans to fix the error (and it's a color-timing error, not a flaw in the negative or anything about poor source materials). Even at 8 bucks, Dame, I'm gonna wait. I'll stick with my low-def DVD, which looks infinitely better.

If you have any interest in Oklahoma! or South Pacific, they both look fantastic though.

I burned a copy of King from a over the air broadcast.. and to me it looks better than the last release.  I really think someone needs to fix this.

You might try going into Best Buy. They will price match, so you'll save shipping. Just have to show them the price on Amazon. And often they're already priced to match Amazon.

Fiddler is worth getting, especially as an upgrade from the LD. It looks great on Blu-ray.

Norman Jewison's commentary track is wonderful too. He has some great stories about how they chose him as a director, casting Topol, his affection for Norma Crane (Golde), the location shooting, etc. Well worth listening to.

And next Tuesday, Satyajit Ray's APU TRILOGY will hit shelves in a gorgeous Criterion edition, and for half price at B&N.   Essential purchase, just no question at all.

Question for the Blu-ray aficionados (I am still new to Blu):

We sat down to watch the Blu-Ray of the first Star Wars (Episode 4) from a new six-disc set that has the three films on Blu-Ray and DVD. The audio was horribly out of sync--so much so that it looked like a badly dubbed foreign-language film.

So we popped in the regular DVD--and the sync was fine.

Our TV is an LG Smart TV and we don't use a sound bar or amplifier.

Would the problem be with the disc?

That should be a problem with the disc. Contact the manufacturer or Amazon if you bought it there and let them know that you have a faulty disc and they should replace it.

For those interested, "Into the Woods" (the Disney film) is now available on Amazon (the Blu-ray with the Digital HD code) for just $9.99, a pretty big price drop, especially for a Disney title. I'm sure it won't last long, so get it while you can (if you want it).

Older post I know--but this just reminds me again how peculiar it is that they didn't do a BD of Show Boat--I mean the DVD looks nice, but...  I mean they even printed the original copies in "real" DVD format (ie not as a burn on demand disc) due to the perceived demand....

Also, I was just on Kino Lorber's site to see if there was a release date yet for the BluRay of Something for Everyone and it says they're having a sale on all of their titles, for anyone interested.  I admit I think I might give into temptation, even though in this case I should know better, and pick up the BluRay of the ridiculous Ken Russell/Nureyev Valentino:  https://www.kinolorber.com/

I picked up Sunday Bloody Sunday, Tootsie, The Graduate and Belle de Jour but I am still upset they haven't released The Umbrellas of Cherbourg or The Young Girls of Rochefort as stand alone blu rays. The only way you can get them is by purchasing the Jacques Demy box set but I am not interested in the other films included so I refuse to get it. Grrrr!!!!

I'll swing by later this month to pick up that NEW WORLD package, which will officially end my financial support of Terrence Malick's career.  Alas, the sublime CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT comes out in August, so I'll have to pay full price, which it is of course worth, like crazy.

Not sure what else I'll pick up.  Maybe that IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, which I caught on TCM recently and enjoyed -- there's nothing in the world like Edith Evans' Lady Bracknell.

Carlos, the Jacques Demy is really worth the price, especially at 50% off. Barnes and Noble members get an additional 10% off. Umbrellas looks absolutely stunning. I'm going to pick up Dr. Strangelove and Gilda. I am beyond excited for Valley of the Dolls and Dekalog in September!!!

Thanks for the heads up TotallyEffed. I'm a member so I just might take advantage of that extra 10% discount and treat myself to the set, who knows? maybe I'll wind up liking the other films included in the set.

While Im at it I may as well pick up Repulsion and make it a totally Catherine Deneuve experience. God knows how much I love that woman! smiley
