What lyrics have you mishead on cast recordings, causing you either confusion, embaressment, amusment, or just one of those "ah ha" moments.

Example; For a long time, Sondheim thought "My Defenses are Down", from Annie Get You Gun was "Mighty Fences Are Down"

I could never understand the "Anonymous and gone tomorrow" line (Enchantment Passing Through-Aida), so I always sang it as Anonemous-angontumo! And then one day I realized what he was actually singing.

It took me forever to figure out the lyrics to some of the PTO songs. I only had a taped copy of the OLCR highlights.

An example:

"Sing once again with me our strange duet" was heard as "she was again with me a strage jewel".

during Angel of Music I kept hearing "Craft to me your glory" - kept trying to figure out what the hell that meant.

I know there were tons others but I can't think of them now.

This isn't mine, but ever since my friend told me it was what she heard, I hear it too.

Swing's "Cry Me A River" - the line is "you told me love was too plebian"

But really, it does sound like "you told me love was too fluffy" - which in a way... sort of makes sense...

Now what would you say if today I started over? Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover And I'll pretend like everything is already alright And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight

A lot of stuff that Raul Esparza sings on the tick tick BOOM recording was hard for me to understand until I listened to it over and over again.

There's one word in Lost in the Wilderness that I just don't know what it is. "Where our future lies _____" I have no idea what it is. It sounds like "aborning" or something but I don't think that's a word. Though that'd what it should be for the rhyming scheme...does anyone know?

On the Dreamgirls OBCR in "I Am Changing" I thought Jennifer Holliday sang "Spent searchin for some light" where she sings "Could make a person blind". I didn't know what it was until I hear the concert version and Lillias enunciates a little better there.

I was also one of the many people who heard the famed "Neverson Babies" on the RENT OBCR before I read the lyrics ("Nevers and maybes")

"Who says you can't bend over backwards and eat bugs if you want to? I guess the bugs would probably say you can't do that that, but assuming that they are willing and consenting bugs, then there's no problem. Let's wig out eating bugs." -RuPaul

I agree with that one, especially in 30/90. I don't remember what I thought it was, but it took me a really long time to realize he was saying "clock is ticking that's for certain." Oh, and the part that says "since the wizard blew off his command." And I still don't know exactly what he says at the beginning of that part. It sounds like "Hear the bell and talk about which way to never never land."

LOL when RENT first came out, I used to think daphne sung "neverson babies" instead of "nevers and maybes" during out tonight.. and also mamma mia..it's hard to understand the brits on the cd when sky sings "i wasn't jealous before we met" can sound like "i was in jail just before we met"

In regards to Lost in the Wilderness: the lyrics are "Where our future lies aborning." You heard correctly :).

Isn't there like a dozen of misheard lyrics threads?

Anywaaaays...

I don't know if this is misheard, but I could swear that in Aida's "A Step Too Far" she starts singing "It's so strange SHE doesn't show me..."

And I still don't know exactly what he says at the beginning of that part. It sounds like "Hear the bell and talk about which way to never never land."

That one's "Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, which way to Never-Neverland?" Maybe I'm just weirdly familiar with children's stories, but I didn't have trouble understanding any of that part. I agree that it's hard to understand some parts of that song at first.

Aaaand I'm also with the many people who never heard "nevers and maybes" in Out Tonight. I honestly didn't realize it until seeing Rosario Dawson sing it in the movie. Updated On: 11/5/06 at 01:53 PM

Urinetown. I heard:

Remember, Bobby, what became of him
How he indulged a whim
Remember how he made a mockery
Of the crockery...

I went to Barnes and Noble last night - the Urinetown libretto was there, and I found out it's "Remember how he made a mockery/He shunned the crockery". I kind of like my version better.

Haha that makes more sense. re: Misheard Lyrics That Have Left You Puzzled Although I will say one thing I absolutely love about that song is the weaving of Peter Pan and the Wizard of Oz. Very smart.

And sweetestsiren, may I say your avatar is HOT!

I have SO many of these.
In into the woods "hello little girl" I always thought he said then something fresh from the palace and I never got it. Also not mine but my mom and my brother thought for wayyy to long that in Buenos Aires in Evita she Instead of Star Qualaty they thought it was Stock Water Tea, It was quite amusing. I have a lot more but I am a little brain dead tonight

In RENT I got "Nevers and maybes" but I thought instead of "You're online with the feline of Avenue B" was "You're inline for the felined of that value be." Had NO idea for like a year and half.

In Dreamgirls, I had trouble with the tear down the mountains section and thought it was Stop the belivers mush la and kill....another had no clue what that meant.

I had a few issues with Give Them What They Want from DRS. Mainly the beginning.

I think my favorite was "A Big Two Weeks On The Riviera" during Here I Am from SCOUDNRELS as well. I always thought it was "I picked two weeks on the riviera," until I sang it that way and someone said I was wrong. Naturally I looked at the lyrics, and they were right, lol.

I always used to think it was that too, until I read your post!

If you google the phrase "Neveron Babies", you'll find several sites devoted to the topic.

When I was 5 years old, I thought Fagin in OLIVER sang:
SO LONG, FARE THEE WELL
PIP PIP, CHEERIO
A BIG BASSOON! (real lyric: "But Be Back Soon")

Recently, when listening to THE LAST FIVE YEARS, during "If I Didn't Believe In You", Norbert Leo Butz sings something that sounds like a magical spell from WICKED:
"TRIPPESOR TRAPPISS"
Of course, he's actuyally saying "trip us or trap us"

I always thought that in The Last 5 Years during Jamie's "Nobody Needs to Know" that the lyrics which say:

"Allright the panic receeds"

was

"I'll write the panic reciepts"

Which at the time I thought was really witty and still like it better than the original!

In Wicked during the Wizard and I at the end I thought she sang, "Hell, it's a chiesty" It wasn't until I read the lyrics that I realized it was, "held in such high esteem" Oh my God I felt like such a dork!
