Posted: 11/23/07 at 9:05pmAt my high school, the drama program is awful, so my friend and I have kind of been shoved in a leadership role. We were really wanting to put on a musical. We have many girls but only one or two boys, so we couldn't seem to find a good fit. Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well there's The Spitfire Grill which is mostly a female cast. I think it only has like 2 or 3 guys in it.
Then there's Little-by-Little which is a 3 girl 1 guy cast.

Grr, off topic, but my school is doing Guys & Dolls in spring. We have the same situation you do, lots and lots of talented girls but maybe 5 guys. The people doing the musical (who aren't connected to the school) have been warned several times, but they don't want to accept that it will be impossible to cast Guys & Dolls without any guys.
I was trying to convince them to do Pippin. There are several guys in that show as well, but if you cast the Leading Player as a woman (my preference actually) you have Pippin (lots of singing) the King (one song) and Louis (no singing) and maybe a couple other minor male characters.
Good luck! Trying to run a high school drama program sounds awful, but keep it up!

Posted: 11/24/07 at 2:24pmThat's a tough one. I love shows with lots of guys because even with the seniority factor of school musicals I can get big roles. Like, my school's doing Beauty and the Beast and my theatre group is doing Tommy. That's hard. Every choice I think of has at least three guys.

Posted: 11/29/07 at 6:49amMy school is doing Pippin as well and me and my friend who is a girl were casted as the Leading Player. Then we have Pippin The Kine and Lewis. Anyways also Moby Dick The Musical has only 2 guys in it. The rest are girls.

Thoroughly Modern Millie could work, if you got a decent amount of guys.
Only 4 actual male parts in it.

Believe it or not, but The Sound of Music has a huge percentage of female singing roles.
The Captain, Max and Rolf along with two of the kids are the only male principals who sing and the mens chorus sings all of two words: "Good Night".
The other male roles are non-singing.
On the other hand, the show is a bit treacly.

Posted: 12/20/07 at 11:15pmi'm in a similiar situation at my school. however, to add more stress, i live in a small town with a fairly new drama program, so our director says that for the time being we only need to do plays that are over-the-top comidies. i've looked into "thoroughly modern millie" and "into the woods." (that one might not fit the catagory, i just really want to do it.) what do you think?

Posted: 12/22/07 at 9:34pmAnnie would be a good show. You must however have a strong male dancer for the part of Rooster and a strong male actor for Warbucks. Roosevelt also could present a problem if you are limited with male actors, as you must be a very good character actor in that role. Other than the other minor male roles like Bert Healy, Mr. Bundles, and the chorus the rest of the cast is female.

Posted: 12/23/07 at 12:05amproblem...we're already doing you're a good man charlie brown in january, so my director said that he doesn't want to do two plays back to back where teenagers have to play little kids. stupid, i know, but he's already said no to annie. any other suggestions?
