Do you think with all of the Extensions Roundabout has announced, and with how well the show is selling there might be a possibility of a tour some time in the future?

Zurich,

I would love to see this happen, but I have a feeling this show is too artsy (and probably too intimate) to sell to touring audiences.

Also, I don't know how portable the projections are. They might be venue-specific. (Granted, I haven't seen the show, this is just conjecture based on what I have heard and seen.)

I would be so happy if they decided to take this show on tour.

The original never had a tour so expect the same for this revival.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE is not mainstream friendly. If anything... it would rank as one of Sondheim's least known shows. Again... I'm referring to mainstream audiences NOT Broadway audiences, which is a small minority. Big difference.

IDK, I think there might be a possibility, what with how many times the show has been extended.

I thought a tour was mentioned in the Sondheim interview?

It could be a 10-city thing, with really long stops in major cities (LA, SF, Chicago, Toronto), but as far as a standard US tour, I don't think so.

The show is in fact *not* selling terribly well. Last week was the first without the subscriber-base in the audience, and the attendance dropped 30%.

I totally agree with this. The projections might need to be an exact distance from the stage and exact height off the ground with a specific amount of space to work with. Not all touring theaters will be able to accomodate that.

On the other hand, with the simple set otherwise, that might make it more portable if they can make the projections work.

I go to the theatre at least once a week on saturdays. I always do the In The Heights lotto and on most nights that I am there it is there at the beggining of the lotto but it isn't there when all is said and done at the lotto.

And, it isn't always up there on TKTS.

And, keep in mind one thing. That now that it has gotten extended there might be less ofa subscriber audience because the people who are subscribers might have seen it already.

I still don't think it will tour. Not even a ten city mini tour.

Roundabout doesn't seem to tour many of their shows. I can think of the shows that didn't make the road. Assassins, Nine, 110, Pajama Game etc. What shows have they toured? Cabaret is the only one I can think of.

I doubt it will for the above reasons, especially the projections. That's the rumored major reason why the Woman in White tour never happened in London. Not enough theatres could be found to have the right dimensions of the stage, load the big backdrop, or have good enough quality projectors themselves. Then the other problem is that there was too much scenery to carry in that case, and it'd be nearly impossible to make any money off of it. I haven't seen SitPwG yet, and plan to do so soon!, but I'm guessing they won't for the same reasons. Or the creative team will get together to use much scaled down projections and more scenery.

There was a thread a while back linking to a 3 page article on the light rigging used in the show. They went into detail about how specific the projection angle and distance to the stage had to be to create the effects for the Broadway production. All kinds of issues from color balancing the sides (front projection) with the rear projection wall to creating the right angles so that the projections were seamless with the set. Also getting the stage as bright as possible without bleeding out the projections (since it is SunDAY in the park) as opposed to Woman In White which had to keep light levels down to achieve the effect.

I can't imagine how they would balance all of these things in different theaters around the country in a cost effective manner, especially since most touring sets have a day and a half to travel and set up. They could do what the Phantom tour does and travel and set-up one set in the next city while the other is being used, but that would be too expensive for this show since it isn't going to draw Wicked-sized crowds.

^ After thinking more about it didn't they also tour Deaf West's Big River? I saw 12 Angry Men, it was very good.

The two leads really make the show, and I doubt that they'll stay any longer to tour. Brittish people have better things to do than stay in the same bloody show forever.

I disagree. He is very good, but not irreplaceable. She was fine, but a lot of her choices were curious to me at best and her voice wasn't the strongest. There are quite a few American actresses I think would be much stronger in the role.

I too would imagine the projections being difficult to tour. They at least seem very space specific. It probably wouldn't be impossible just expensive. It might also take a few more days to set up in each city and that would require more money.

Can we have one BWW thread without Gypsy being mentioned. Love the show to death but c'mon people!

I don't think Sunday will have a tour. They're doing a production here in Seattle early '09 and I doubt they'd have gotten the rights if a tour was planned.

For what it's worth, AVID producers (who are doing the Spamalot and Happy Days tours) has "Sunday" on their roster as an upcoming tour.
