BROADWAY RIDDLE

You know the story by now of the You Tube divorcee, Tricia Walsh Smith? Her husband is Phil Smith, who runs Broadway’s Shubert Organization. You’d think a certain theater writer would have been all over this scandal. Alas, he has not penned one word on the subject despite the story’s now international recognition. Why, you wonder? I’m told said writer has long held a position with “The Shuberts” in his sights, and didn’t want to do a thing to jeopardize that future. Now the national entertainment press — and not the local NY theater wag — can claim a New York story as their own.

Michael Riedel? from RC in Austin, Texas

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

He did mention I thought. Said she should win an award. Something like that.

Wasn't this discussed here before?

Yes, he made mention of it at the end of his column about who the Tony nominees would be. He said that she deserved the award for Special Theatrical Event.
