I just got back. I promise a more in depth review tomorrow, but I'm quite tired now.
The show started just after 7pm, and we got out just after 12am. Five hours in the theatre is a looooong time. There were some tech problems (which can be expected, and is very excusable in previews), however we did not get to see one of the big fight scenes, as something malfunctioned twice and they could not get it fixed. Insead the stage manager told us to take his word and he explained what happened.
There were some things that impressed me (the end of act one was really neat, and I've never seen any thing like it before), and the stage and set were pretty cool.
I think that any LOTR fan will like this show. It is NOT a musical. The music is almost a background. It's like watching a movie. Anyone who knows nothing about LOTR may be a little confused, as they skip over some stuff. The cast was wonderful. Anyway, I promise a more in depth review. But right now, I'm just a bit tired. 5 hours long...
EDIT: I forgot to mention, they announced at the start of the show that to make up for any tech problems that may occur during the show, all food and drink was free. Feel alcohol, free water, free chocolate covered almonds. I have to say, THAT was really cool. I guess they knew there would be problems.
Thanks for just that little bit and I can't wait to hear the LONGER review...Sounds like they really wanted to make the audience happy by giving them all the free drinks and snacks. Thanks again!
I've heard from persons working on LOTR that it is the most monumental technical show imaginable and it is no wonder that it ran 5 hours at its first preview. It does not officially open until March 23rd so there is time to work out the kinks and trim it down to its intended three and half-hour (including intermissions) running time. Glad to hear how gracious the producers are to their audience. The Mirvishes,(Ed & David Mirvish) who are co-presenting LOTR, have always been the classiest of all theatrical producers so it comes as no surprise. Can't wait to see it once it hits its stride!
