Most unprofessional comments said by 'professionals' about other 'professio
Posted On: 7/29/09 at 04:36 AM

I didn't want to turn this into a Patti bashing thread, so I've tried to structure it so you can share your own stories. But I came across this:

http://www.variety.com/awardcentral_article/VR1117987517.html?nav=news&categoryid=1983&cs=1

""It's a huge part," Patti LuPone said of the legendary stage-mother of "Gypsy," the role that won her the Tony for leading actress in a musical. "It encompasses everything: comedy, tragedy, singing, shouting, a range of emotions. If you lose the Tony for this, it's like you didn't do a good job. Isn't that terrible to say?"

This sounds like Bernadette and/or Ethel Merman bashing to me :P, (it could be a joke, but she did say "Isn't that terrible to say")

Without music the world would Bb.

Much as I'm not a fan, I don't think she was attacking the other actresses there. It sounds more like an act of modesty by self-deprecation.

I guess, that is, "I wouldn't have felt I did a good Job if I didn't win", and that the "terrible thing to say" is it shouldn't have such an effect.

I still can't look at it completely like it was an innocent comment though :P.

I think it's both what devonian.t said and a classic case of LuPone Foot in Mouth. I don't think she would have said it if she realized how it came out.

I didn't want to turn this into a Patti bashing thread, so...

Don't be disingenuous. Yes, you did.

Well I'm genuinely interested to hear about professionals bashing other professionals; (composers>composers actors>actors etc..)

So maybe I should edit it to be Patti Bashing+your own stories :P.

well, I've heard rumblings that Arthur Laurents didn't care for Sam Mendes' direction of Gypsy. I'm not sure if he ever went on the record about it, though.

Not only did he go on record saying that he hated Mendes' production in The New York Post, it takes up several chapters in his memoirs!

I think he said maybe once that Sam Mendes didn't have the "musical" in his bones.

I guess the WSS revival shows Laurents' bones are too decrepit to have it either :P.

"An act of modesty by self-deprecation"?? Are we talking about Patti Lupone here? The last time she performed an act of modesty was when her picture was taken in the delivery room moments after Patti was born and she DIDN'T have the nurse ejected from the hospital. As Patti would say...oy vey!!
