How to choose just one? I'd go with any show that touts itself as having a "rock" score. Put a bass, guitar, synth, and drums on a stage and the musical illiterates (the ones who couldn't tell you the difference between a fermata and a suspension) start throwing words like "relevant" and "contemporary" about. As long as the marketing team says it's "rock," things like story, character, and craft seem to be unnecessary.

But up for valid discussion as well would be Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables, all rather mindless/artless/astonishingly successful examples of inflated children's theatre.

" Newintown, how can you classify Les Miserables as 'mindless' and 'artless'? I don't think that position can be substantiated. Children's theatre... but with more whores and suicide than a Disney show?"

Anything can be "substantiated." Les Miserables is an exceptionally simple-minded show - utterly devoid of humor (I'm aware that the Threnardier scens are meant to be "comic," but no one is laughing much at them), with a score that borders on Composition 101 level simplicity (much of the score can be sung to the same accompaniment). As far as narrative is concerned, the show is told in a string of sentimental clichés; when a potentially political moment does happen, the audience (unless they've studied it prior) has no idea what the students are "rebelling" against at all (nor do they seem to care much).

"Children's theatre," as I used it above, isn't about specific content, but about artlessness, lack of sophistication or deep thought, and superficiality (even when it pretends to be profound, generally by eschewing any semblance of humor).

Posted by Idiot 2013-01-03 15:06:57

Newintown, you're just flat out wrong. They may well be your opinions, but your opinions are wrong.

The story of Les Mis is intricate, complex, and deeply layered, steeped in the complexity of the most difficult questions life has to offer. The music is soaring and intricate and serves the story perfectly. The original staging was beyond artful -- it was complex in a way that seemed simplistic because of it's inventiveness and flawless execution.

Also, I don't see what's so great about Oklahoma

Probably the fact that it's one of the most influential pieces of musical theatre ever written. It's not so much how the show comes across now (which I still adore), but how it came across when it premiered. And how it changed musical theatre forever.

Les Miserables is an exceptionally simple-minded show

Or...it's the opposite of that.

Cats. There's no plot. It's just Cats.

I don't know...lack of plot doesn't really bother me when it is intentional. Like a revue or when the source material itself has no plot (i.e. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats). It's what you do with the material that I find interesting, and Cats was extraordinarily creative and innovative when it opened. I found its instant global appeal very apparent when I saw it.

Newintown, is your central thesis that shows with rock-based or rock-inspired scores have tended to be self-inflated by the "currentness" of the sheer IDEA of rock in theatre and thus tend to get lazy, or that "rock" is utterly incompatible with theatre by their very contradictory natures?

what is the most overrated musical of all time
Posted by newintown 2013-01-03 20:11:19

I don't think either is my thesis. "Rock," as I've noted before, is a style of arrangement, not an inherent form of music. But many people, from an overwhelming desire to be connected to the mainstream, profess to love anything that they're told is "contemporary."

Many shows with "rock" scores would be totally ignored if scored for a more traditional pit orchestra, although the music itself (the basic composition) and lyrics were exactly the same.

If Wicked opened back in the days when really great musicals opened on Broadway I doubt it would be the sell out that it is today.

Phantom of the Opera is one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life. How this mess is still running is beyond me, but, hey, it's giving lots of performers jobs.

Mamma Mia is just... UGGGHHH! Hate the show, hate the movie. Awful.

Oklahoma is another one I never cared for. I understand the historical significance and everything, but it never really thrilled me that much. Lovely score, but the plot is pretty dull and that dream ballet serves no purpose to the story whatsoever. We just saw the first act. We don't need to see it again as a 20 minute interpretive dance.

This falls into two camps for me the most overrated in terms of commercial hype and they hype that happens here on the boards where rabid fans gush and gush and gush about a show. We here can just as bad as commercial hype. For the Former, I'd have to join in the Spamalot camp. I saw it here in Chicago before it transferred and while I found it very funny I was really perplexed by the awards it got. What is the most overrated show in the theater community? That for me would be Follies. It's talked up by the fans with so fervor much that, for me, it was such a... meh.... show when I saw it. Sometimes we here let our passion blind us to not see any flaws in shows we love.

Shows that DID live up to the hype. Ih the commercial sense, Avenue Q. It was hands down the most I've ever laughed in a show and I loved it. Most hyped community show that was as good? Grey Gardens. Still an amazing piece of theater that I am so proud to have gotten to see.

Yipes. The replies at the start to others' replies are like they're on the rag, or something. It's rather interesting, because all it took was for someone, anyone, to declare their fave "overrated" and then the hot flashes began. Ladies, ladies, mantengan la calma!

I'm perfectly OK with people who dislike Les Mis, as long as they explain why. I don't agree with Newintown because it affects me on a different, not-so-simplistic level, but I'd never call him simplistic for not experiencing what I do.

I adore Follies but must agree that too many cling onto what they think it says about them for liking it. Almost as if just liking it automatically bestows inheritance of grand intellect and sophistication. Obviously not all, but a nice chunk of that fandom need to realize it's a perfectly accessible show that is well written. Not some mystical work of dumbfounding brilliance that only a genius could love. *eyeroll*

I think all musicals get to have their good points overblown and their bad points over emphasized from time to time. That's quickly becoming overrated.

I find LES MIZ overrated. There doesn't seem to be much subtext. All the important songs (e.g. WHAT HAVE I DONE, I DREAMED A DREAM, ON MY OWN, BRING HIM HOME) consist of actors singing exactly what they mean and how they feel. CF. FOLLIES, which has also been recently mentioned in the thread. It's so much more interesting to me that a character could be singing about one thing but the song has more meaning beyond the words. For example, IN BUDDY'S EYES....the subtext being of course that she isn't happy with Buddy at all :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwFxf9lAzhA

Subtext is quite interesting when done well. E.g. Everything's Coming Up Roses - the subtext of the song is that Rose is almost delusional/relentless/crazy. Sweeney Todd also has a lot of subtext - e.g. Pretty Women is thrilling and tense because there is subtext that Sweeney is about to try and kill Judge Turpin, or Not While I'm Around is interesting when Mrs Lovett sings the last verse to Toby saying nothing will harm him, which we know is a lie because he suspects Sweeney.

Where are these moments in LES MIZ?

I enjoyed the movie a lot, I think the actors (perhaps excluding Russel Crowe) did a good job to convince us that they felt how the songs suggested they felt, but I think the musical would have been more interesting if there was more subtext. "Master of the House" does have subtext, which is part of why it is so funny, as does when the Bishop is covering for Valjean (which I do enjoy). But are there other/more important moments?

Also, I have an issue with the sung-throughness. But I suppose this comes up often. What is the point of singing if you could just say it with dialogue? To me, a good musical song will add something over and above something that can be said via dialogue. It makes the musical seem bloated to me.

Posted by My Oh My 2013-01-05 20:11:16

Aren't you the same one who said hardcore Sondheim fans are of superior intellect? Now you're trying to prove that Les Mis caters to morons and people who aren't serious about musicals.

Of course some musicals have more subtext than others and nobody is arguing against Sondheim or lowering his works to levels they don't belong in. Yet, it's ridiculously easy to get fans of his shows all worked up.

There are plenty on these boards lately dismissing Les Mis as simplistic and nobody is losing their heads over it. I don't agree at all that it's a simplistic piece of junk, but I've said it before and I'll say it again...I do think Les Mis is generally overrated in how it's perceived as a work where absolutely NO obvious pop or rock elements should ever get near it; how ONLY classically trained singers, even Opera singers have the right to sing it; how it's some mystical emotional journey that one must get SERIOUS about, including the characters and actors portraying them. To a lot of people, it's very serious business and extremely high art. Yeah, sure, whatever.

In that sense, it is massively overrated. I don't take Les Mis quite as seriously and I consider myself one of the most passionate fans of the piece. But I also know and actually pay attention to the music and I think the original work has great merit that all these revisions have destroyed. Even so, I place the blame where it belongs and look to those responsible for tampering with it over the years because there's nothing inherently pretentious or preachy about it. The original work always maintained a balance that is gone nowadays.

And who said entertainment has to have loads of subtext in order for it to be entertaining and moving? For one, Les Mis does have subtext in its social commentary. It may not be as strategically implemented as Sondheim is known to do, but his commentary isn't as broad. That's a good thing, but not in a story like Les Mis, where there's so many characters and events, getting to know each character on that level would make it overbearing. Some people already find Sondheim fare overbearing. Period. I don't, but his fans can certainly be. Relax, I'm messing with you...kinda.

Not that I have a problem with that, really. I love overbearing fans of musical theatre and we need more of those! Those who overwhelm with musings, knowledge, and worthless details! XD

I never said that "hardcore Sondheim fans are of superior intellect". However, once someone on this forum described Sondheim fans as "blowhards and pretentious twits who think they know everything", and I responded:

Where do we draw the line between people who are pretentious and people who actually are highly intelligent, educated people that do know better than the 'commoner'.

I am intentionally phrasing this in a trolling way, but if a Sondheim fan is well read and studies at the University of Oxford (and people like this do exist and have posted on this forum), are they pretentious or do they actually just know better?

I certainly am not generalising this to Sondheim fans in general.
------

Now, RE: "trying to prove that Les Mis caters to morons and people who aren't serious about musicals". That is your conclusion, not mine. My claims are that 1. Musicals are more interesting to me with subtext (provided examples) 2. Les Mis has little subtext 3. I believe music in musicals should add something over and above dialogue 4. I don't believe that Les Mis does that often therefore, (my conclusion): Les Mis is overrated. Only you have used the word "moron" and "people who aren't serious about musicals".

RE: "Does entertainment need to have subtext". I don't know, I mean clearly it doesn't. But it's more interesting to me if it does, at least in musicals.

^ You mean a raked stage? I love those. I have an odd fascination with them but don't recall the Los Angeles production having a raked stage. Maybe I sat too close (4th row) and the Pantages stage is notoriously high, it gives those who claim you have to CRANK your neck to see anything some credibility.

Well maybe one gets tired of reading dismissive things being said about stuff they care about and so they become dismissive themselves. Hey, I'm not perfect. Guilty as charged.

I enjoy things with more subtext, too. But it has to move me. Some Sondheim musicals have failed to move me, others have moved me more than I expected. Case in point--Follies. I was ready to have a headache and regret spending the over $300 I spent on my final performance, front row ticket. Best thing I've seen in ages.

However, can't say the same for some of his other, less known musicals. The thing that I've never understood is he can sometimes be musically uninteresting. And that's odd because I find Sweeney, some songs from Into the Woods, Sunday, and the entirety of Follies to be musically thrilling. I could never warm up to Company and Pacific Overtures as I found them to be overbearing. Time and time again, I encounter some wild Sondheimist telling me off and saying I didn't get it because I'm an idiot, no matter how many times I've proven I've given his stuff more than a fair chance, actually love a lot of his works, and am not just a passing theatre enthusiast. It's a popular thing to say those who end up being alienated or find certain shows off-putting to be stupid or moronic. And with the wealth of brain power that many Sondheim fans claim to possess, you'd think they'd know better than cast blanket statements about people who don't worship everything he's ever done.

I'm a detail obsessed nut for a reason, and it has nothing to do with the plain details. It's the subtext I get out of them and I'm not irrationally obsessed to the point I see things that aren't there. If anything, I'm brutal when it comes to calling out people who grasp, as discovering for yourself a song's underlying meaning is what theatre is all about to me. Les Mis is no exception.

It isn't so much concerned with being clever, but still, it moves me and not just in a weepy, crybaby fashion. It challenges me intellectually and has enriched my perception of myself and society. It has fed this insane addiction since 1986. Either I'm absolutely crazy and see things that aren't there or Les Mis moves people in an emotionally intelligent way. I can't stand things that tell me how to feel, but I'm a hardcore fan of the thing that people swear is desperately trying to make them weep with soaring emotions.

I find the original stage production to be something of a miracle (figuratively) in that my interest and sense of wonder hasn't waned all these years. I used to look at people hopelessly obsessed with things I didn't care about as odd and somehow deficient in something or other, but how on earth could I place myself above them when I'm the one not understanding how they feel? I'm the one who doesn't "get it." It's in the perception one chooses to apply and far too often people think if they can't understand something, it's somehow other people's fault. And it's their fault because they're somehow lacking, yet, they provide no evidence that they possess what they claim others are lacking.

I can claim I write these dissertations because what I feel is real and it compels me.

Bullsh*t.

It plays a small role, but at the end of the day, I'm still a wordy mutha.

There are the commercial shows I feel are overrated (Wicked, Phantom) and then the more serious shows I think are overrated (Once, Company). I don't mind the vastly overrated commercial ones as much, because they usually either fail hilariously a la Phantom or manage to produce some sort of entertainment, whether through songs or spectacle, like Wicked. But the serious, art shows just put me to sleep. Once bored me; I wouldn't call the action and song subtextual, but more abstract, which just doesn't tend to move me as much. Company is what I call a "point" show: one that exists to tell you a lesson rather than to tell you a story. That sort of thing tends to annoy me, and without characters I can connect to/care about, my attention starts to wander.

“Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Mis,” and “The Book of Mormon.”

“Phantom” is dull and uninspired. I am always surprised that this is a tourist favorite and one of the shows “non-theatre people” will actually attend.

I adore much of the music from “Les Mis,” but the show is overwrought and much too long. However, the thing that turns me off the most is that I have a hard time caring for any of the characters. I only ever TRULY care about Fantine. I want good for Jean Valjean (and, occasionally Eponine, if played well), but really could take them or leave them. If I was more invested in these character’s lives I think I would be able to swallow the excess of emotion, but, because I don’t, the songs feel less like characters expressing themselves and more like a place for composers to insert some beautifully written works.

The hype surrounding “The Book of Mormon” is insane. It’s a fine show, but not the “Best Musical of the Century.” I think that quote and their constant use of it (not that I blame their marketing team for using it!) and the money people are willing to spend to see it makes “The Book of Mormon” number one in most overrated musical for me.

Quite a number of people mock Phantom of the Opera, but whatever that number is it is completely inconsequential in comparison to the number that laud their approval of the show. The sustained support isn't because of a fad....it has been going on for more than a quarter century. Its success is unprecedented. How many countries (not just America) have "delighted" their audiences with Phantom productions and outsold anything before or since Phantom came along? It's not just about money...millions of people simply love it and find great joy in experiencing it. What other stage show (or any entertainment vehicle) has been as successful globally?

Overrated? Yeah, OK, maybe. But you want to associate failure with this show? Good luck with that.

Most overrated? As in undeserved critical acclaim? As in huge publicity and ticket demand, despite lack of critical acclaim or despite story, script, or musical problems? As in staying power for a long run or a revival despite similar problems? Overrated as in being pretentious or simplistic or shallow, but people don’t notice? (Gosh, I’m giving away the fact that I’m a lawyer based on my insistence on parsing the word. )

Depending on which form of being overrated someone means, here are my nominations: “Spiderman, Turn off the Dark,” which I haven’t seen. I’m nominating it because it cost a fortune to stage, and appears to have been designed as a spectacle to showcase gee-whiz effects.

The Sound of Music, Anything Goes, and Annie, because they’re so darned CORNY.

Oklahoma and Annie Get Your Gun, because they’re hopelessly dated.

Jekyll and Hyde because the story is too unsophisticated for modern audiences, although it would be fine with some clever tweaking.

Grease and Bye-Bye Birdie, because, even though they’re a lot of fun, they’re shallow.

Love Never Dies, because, even though the music, singing, and staging (at least in the Australian version) were amazing, it failed to live up to its hype, probably because it managed to infuriate a bunch of Phans by contradicting their Phan-Phic Phantasies.

Rebecca, because it’s a hit in Europe and fancies itself the next Les Mis or Phantom, but can’t even manage to open on Broadway after selling a bunch of tickets.

Recent revivals of My Fair Lady, because, no matter how good the singing and dancing, the story loses much of its richness when an overweight “alte kaker” is cast as Higgins, taking away the sexual tension that pervades the original.

"It's been running for over 20 years, people flock to it, it's made oodles of money -- how do YOU define "success"?"

I wasn't talking about my definition of anything. Matt scoffed that anyone would call Phantom a failure, simply because it's financially successful and has lots of fans.

If I have to repeat myself, I guess I have to: I said, "Failure can mean things other than $$ (although in America, we're taught that money is the only measure of success)" and that's exactly what I meant.

Another definition of success would be "artistic integrity," which is, admittedly, subjective. There are some who think paintings of cats on velvet have artistic integrity (free from irony). And there are some smart, sophisticated people who think Phantom is amateurish low-brow nonsense posing as high art.

If you love Phantom and think it's an achievement of the first rank, those others' opinions don't make you wrong; conversely, your love of the show doesn't make others wrong, either.

We can all disagree, and state our disagreements; we can also stop short before crying, "you're wrong and I'm right!" (Although many people seem to feel that any disagreement with their opinion is an automatic accusation of being wrong.)

Quite seriously, that's probably because, if they flop, those of us outside NY are unlikely to have seen them. The touring shows are the ones that don't flop, and many of us put out the fortune required for a trip to NY to see a Broadway musical only after it turns out to be a hit.

Say it with me: Theatre is subjective.

I'm not a fan of Spring Awakening, but I did notice that they mics used in Spring Awakening were used with a very specific concept and with intention. Not to mention they were hand-held mics, unlike the ones in Rent. Apples/oranges.

why must we be hit over the head with the mics as if that's where we are and not on Broadway?

Because of the sound design, orchestrations and overall conceptual design of the show. Variations in sound design are like variations in visual design. Some shows have realistic sets, some use projections, others are minimalist. Personally, I didn't feel hit over the head by the use of mics in Spring Awakening, but clobbered with the metaphorical flowery lyrics and the after-school-special PSA message. I did like the lighting and choreography, however.

I'll have to throw my hat in for My Fair Lady. Much of the score is wonderful, with the exception of "You Did It", which I find really grating, but it's married with a book that is both lazy for simply being Pygmalion, the play, with musical numbers (a play book can't be a musical book for a number of reasons, all of which make themselves present in My Fair Lady), and creepy. I've read every article and analysis I can get my hands on in support of Higgins and Eliza getting together and it still makes me feel nauseous, as if Christine had gone traipsing off with the Phantom.

Until I saw the 2001 London revival. That production forever changed my mind on the material, which can be utterly charming and engrossing in the hands of the right director.

After Eight: Cute. I love Merrily, but I don't think it's the greatest ever and I will recognize that my personal obsession with it is just that, personal. It has great qualities but will probably never come together into a cohesive whole (though I'd enjoy seeing it do that), which is its most significant setback.

And yes, much. Much of the score is wonderful, and I mean that in the best possible way. I think "On The Street Where You Live" is one of the greatest songs ever written for musical theatre (particularly so on the OBCR, where it comes sailing out at the listener like a sweet spring breeze). Admittedly my distaste for "The Rain In Spain" and, to a lesser extent, "I Could Have Danced All Night", come from over-exposure (I remember having a CD of Broadway hits with the latter on it as a kid that I listened to incessantly) but "You Did It" does just kind of grate on me. In a sense it's probably meant to, given Eliza's place in the scene, but it gets at me like something in my teeth (I also find myself sitting through "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" with the a waiting-room level of enthusiasm).

Most of my reason for calling it overrated is just that I find the ending abhorrent. I like most of the rest of it, even if it bugs me that the book is simply Pygmalion with segments musicalized because it weirds the pacing (Mister Matt gives me hope that it could be successful in the right hands - my exposure to it is limited, after all), but I think the same of Pygmalion's altered ending.

I love My Fair Lady as a musical but Audrey Hepburn does nothing for me in the movie.

I find Wicked really overrated, and I actually like it. Wicked got me into musicals and was my first favourite... But it's not as great as a lot of people think it is.

I quite like Cats, actually, once you get past the part where there's no plotline.

Merrily We Roll Along is pretty meh, although "Not a Day Goes By" is stunning.

"Have you seen it?"

I've seen a few local productions here. They all had phenomenal casts and were overall good productions, and I enjoyed watching the show, but I'm a huge Sondheim fan and it didn't really compare. For me, at least. I know a lot of people like it though!

The problem with trying to decide whether a musical from an earlier era is overrated is that we cannot view it through the eyes of its contemporaries -- as the Talmud says, we see farther than our ancestors because we are standing on their shoulders.

I happen to think that "My Fair Lady" is one of the greatest musicals of all times, and not overrated at all. In 1956, when it opened on Broadway, the changed ending would have been revolutionary -- an erstwhile misogynist falls for a woman because she exhibits spirit and independence, unlike so many other women of the era. As for why Eliza returns to Higgins: The musical hints that there is much that happened off-stage --"This ring isn't the jeweler's. It's the one you bought me in Brighton. I don't want it now." In other words, they went to the beach, he bought her a ring (a RING) and she's been wearing it until after he ignored her part in "his" triumph. The layers of the story, to me, make it timeless. I think Alan Jay Lerner managed to improve GBS's story by softening it and removing some of the misogyny. In 2013, that's impressive. In the 1950's, it was extraordinary.

As for the most overrated, I'd say "Oklahoma," with the Talmudic caveat in mind. The story makes light of the very serious dispute between the cowboys and farmers, and presents a heroine who is a shallow ninny. On the other hand, the choreography was considered revolutionary, especially with the use of the dance doubles. But, considering "Oklahoma's" numerous revivals, most people apparently disagree with me.

For me, it's "the sound of music'

It was made into one of the best movie musicals of all time - but it just hasn't held up well.

financial success/people loving it doesn't make it overrated it makes it popular. Overrated is when a piece has praise lavished all over it although in many peoples opinion it isn't actually the most brilliant piece. Work like 'Spring Awakening' falls into that category. Not because it isn't good but it isnt the ground breaking piece everyone said it was. Wicked on the other hand is not overrated because all the critics and academics hated it.

I'd also have to say JERSEY BOYS? I just saw that this week in Houston. I found the book to be disgustingly thin. Did the writers think the audience wouldn't care or desire a good book? If so, they should just scrap the book and present a staged concert.

I don't see how this musical is so popular.

Also, the sound mixing in Houston was awful!!!

While Phantom and Les Mis are on the list, I personally think WICKED is the most overrated musical of all time. I mean, it's an alright show, but in my opinion it does not deserve half the attention it gets and should've closed a long time ago.

one universal definition of most overrated or most underrated is impossible.
