it appears We Will Rock You has postponed (or cancelled?) their Bwy stint and instead will be doing Vegas and a tour. Aren't alot of Vegas shows non-eq? re: We Will Rock You? Posted by tristarr32 2003-12-30 11:03:57.0
According to many people it's awful. I don't think they mean the music, but I guess some of the lines are amazingly stupid. Sounds like an awesome show :P re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Mister Matt 2003-12-30 11:21:47.0
I haven't seen it, but my friends in London said the score is the draw. The songs are fun and the arrangements quite good, but the book is supposedly rather ridiculous. Similar reaction to the Rod Stewart musical, Tonight's the Night. re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Chevstriss 2003-12-30 11:30:01.0
Its official folks - I've just received emails from Actor's Equity verifying that WE WILL ROCK YOU is coming in under the radar as a non-union production. re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Deena Jones2 2003-12-30 11:30:34.0
We Will Rock You was a mess but the music was indeed the draw for me to see it. The Vocals by all of the leads (except the Killer Queen- revolting!) were amazing as well as the chorus. The choreography if you can call it that was hideous and embarassing. The costumes were beyond garish and the set was ridiculous. But, I still had fun- oh, trhat glorious Queen music- the band rocked and the arrangements were amazing. Will it fly in the US- no!!! re: We Will Rock You? Was Killer Queen an understudy? re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Chevstriss 2003-12-30 11:36:13.0
I saw the Killer Queen u/s and she truly could not sing. But she works alot in the west end. huh? and she was a skinny young white girl when the Killer Queen is a middle aged big, black diva. re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by popcultureboy 2003-12-30 11:44:19.0
Originally, they considered a skinny white blonde girl for the main performer of Killer Queen, but went in the complete opposite direction, they then decided to keep her understudy. Go figure. re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Deena Jones2 2003-12-30 12:53:35.0
The Killer Queen was not the understudy. She was a large Black woman (maybe named Sharon something...???)who sang flat the entire time she was onstage- just awful. She "killed" her version of Killer Queen with strange notes and granted she does sound better on the Cast recording- she is just not up to snuff for the role. re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Chevstriss 2003-12-30 12:58:01.0
really? Sharon D Clarke has quite a fan following and I really wanted to see her but she was on vacation the whole time I was in London. surprised to hear about pitch problem, but that coulda been pitchfixed on the CD. re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Becky 2003-12-30 13:30:41.0
I don't know if the Vegas production will end up being non-equity, but I remember Tony Vincent was offered the Vegas run but he turned it down. re: re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by daisy hilton 2003-12-30 16:20:25.0
Yeah, Big League Theatricals is putting out the tour next season. They're also doing Aida, Miss Siagon (well, continuing) and 42nd St. re: re: re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Mister Matt 2003-12-30 16:34:42.0
A friend of mine is the understudy for The Engineer in the Miss Saigon tour. It's quite a good production. re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Chevstriss 2003-12-30 16:44:28.0
but hasn't Big League also done some equity tours? are you saying that Saigon, Aida, and 42nd St will all be non-eq next yr? re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by daisy hilton 2003-12-30 17:00:12.0
No, they're all non-equity. The problem with Big League is that they don't always advertise as non-eq., leading people to believe they're equity and causing confusion. Equity had a big problem with that (which I can understand). re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by BwayTheatre11 2003-12-30 17:30:37.0
Is Big League non-Equity? re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by JakeB 2003-12-30 18:45:37.0
We Will Rock You is the worst musical in the world. It would not last a second on Broadway because the critics would kill it and it does not deserve to leap out of its grave like in England - where it gained massive publicity as they performed at the Queen's Jubilee concert. It's like giving Dance of the Vampires the Pulitzer Prize. A disgrace to the name of musical theatre. re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Broadwaylilhead 2003-12-30 19:14:21.0
I was in Madrid this past September and this show was just about to premiere there. I asked a local and they said it had been postponed several times already but was set to open. Previews were not being kind so they were making some drastic changes. re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Chevstriss 2003-12-30 20:17:45.0
I'm positive the 42nd St that came thru Nashville last summer was equity. Was that not Big League? Was there another tour out? re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by broadwayguy2 2003-12-31 00:40:49.0
the 42nd Street tour is an equity tour that is out on a special contract that allows for lower minum salaries due to the very lasrge cast size. re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by alterego 2003-12-31 09:18:49.0
I'm with JakeB on this. It is currently at the end of a 7 month stint here in Melbourne. They are currently advertising 'last 7 weeks' and are selling out a 2,250 seat theatre 8 times a week. Everyone I know that has any idea of what is good has rubbished this show here, yet it still does business... so go figure. re: re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? This all confuses me. I thought "Killer Queen" was the most notable vocal talent on the CD. Why would they opt for a live version if she was such a out of tune performer???? I think that it's a disgrace when people name the entire cast of Mama Mia and Rent as diva's etc, because I grew up with some real amazing shows out there (Miss saigon, Les Mis, Cats, Phantom, Side Show, The Life etc etc etc.). BUT, I am only twenty and do like the "pop musicals" just as much as the "regular" musicals (i.e Aida, Rocky Horror, etc etc etc). In WWRY, I thought the chorus was amazing and that there could be some real good things happening for the show. But, hey, I seem to be the only one that thinks Cats was amazing. re: re: re: re: re: re: We Will Rock You? Posted by bronte604 2004-01-01 01:01:57.0
I lived in London last summer for a few months and got to see WWRY twice at Dominion. The show itself is awful, but I thought the cast was very talented. I missed seeing Tony Vincent, but I was really impressed with Hannah Jane Fox and Kerry Ellis. : re: We Will Rock You? Posted by Chevstriss 2004-01-01 02:29:12.0
my whole point is that whether this show is good or bad, its making money overseas and its a disgrace to bring it over here non-equity. I think they are doing it to avoid the critics. The financial backers have more ching than most Bwy producers. re: : re: We Will Rock You? Posted by JakeB 2004-01-01 13:16:32.0
One thing I difference i noticed between the West End and Broadway is that their audiences don't seem to appreciate their performers the way Broadway audiences do. re: re: : re: We Will Rock You? Posted by bronte604 2004-01-01 16:28:22.0
