Grumpy Old Men -- The Musical ?????
Posted by MargoChanning 2005-07-08 15:41:36.0

From Playbill.com:

"Producer Jeff Gardner has secured the rights to the 1993 hit movie "Grumpy Old Men" and hopes to turn the property into a stage musical and bring it to Broadway in spring 2008, Variety reported.

Gardner, an actor whose credits include The Wild Party, is new to the producing game. He previously produced Night Out in San Diego.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau had a late career hit with "Grumpy Old Men," in which they played two crotchety neighbors whose intense dislike for each other only grows when they begin competing for the affections of sexy new neighbor Ann-Margret. The film produced a sequel, "Grumpier Old Men," in 1995.

"Grumpy Old Men" is only the latest film property to be developed into a musical. Other titles on their way to Broadway include "Legally Blonde," "Moonstruck," "Ball of Fire," "The Wedding Singer," "Heartbreakers," "Those Lips, Those Eyes," "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "Mermaids."

will it ever END!!!! I truly hope that this is NOT what Broadway will become. That's why "Light in the Piazza" is so refreshing!!!

I guess it could be a great vehicle for a couple of veteran actors. George Hearn? John Cullum? Joel Grey? Alan Alda?

And in 25 years when it's revived -- Lane and Broderick.

Oh .. NO. The movie to musical thing must stop. Like, The Wedding Singer and The First Wives Club, okay .. but Grumpy Old Men? We needn't have anyone have a heart attack on stage.

Dick Latessa can hopefully return to Broadway for this one.

Akiva

p.s...Why do I predict that Natahn Lane and Mathew Broderick will be paired up for this in a revival in like 30 years?

Dick Latessa would have a hard time. He is so sweet.
Big stretch.
How about Jackie Mason and Dick Latessa?

I'd LOVE to see Daniel Davis in this. I think he'd be great in the Jack Lemmon role.

(I can still like him from the audience Diva. OK?)

"will it ever END!!!! I truly hope that this is NOT what Broadway will become. That's why "Light in the Piazza" is so refreshing!!! "

Sorry, MusicalDirector...THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA was both a novel AND a movie before it became a musical.

"Grumpy Old Men" is a classic and, if done right, would make a killer musical.

I don't think GRUMPY OLD MEN is considered a classic dear.

re: Grumpy Old Men -- The Musical ?????

It hasn't been around long enough to be a classic. I don't know of anyone who would consider it a classic.

No ONE person decides what is a classic and what isn't. Everyone has their own opinion. And I know plenty of people who do consider it a classic.

Classic or Not-Classic, with the right two actors, it could be a lot of fun. I agree with Margo and Mamie: George Hearn, John Cullum, Joel Grey, Alan Alda, Daniel Davis - all good names.I'd love to see Ann Margaret reprise her role, too. Or there are any number of wonderful women "of a certain age" who would be knockouts.

WTF is wrong with you? It's a matter of opinion. I have nothing to prove to you...especially since you haven't even been on this board for a month.

People have their own likes, dislikes, and opinions. This is mine. Deal with it.

Jeff may be new to the producing business, but he is one funny character actor. His show is called "Legends of Vaudville"
His Jimmy Durante is royal. He just appeared with Neil Berg's "100 yrs. of Bd'w" at Lenape PAC, Marlton last week. Liked him so much I hope to work with him very soon. Wishing him all the best with his "grumpy" project.

The only thing I would be worried about is the demographic this show would appeal to. In my opinion, it wouldn't appeal to a very broad one. But hey, some shows surprise you. I mean, when I went to see Altar Boyz with my mom and my sister, there were quite a few older people in my section of the pit .. so you never know, I guess.
