- Jim Norton Will Play Grandpa In YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU Revival Feb 5, 10:59:32 PM
I can't think of any performer before the pubic today that would be more "right" for this role. Hope the others are as well-chosen, too. Cheyenne would be a great Tony and Kate Baldwin a fine Alice. And how about Jackie Hoffman as the dipsomanic? It's a fine play from a distant era that still has many points to make today. My best to everyone involved!!!!

I got mine about a week ago.
- Donna Murphy's Wonderful Town Feb 3, 09:20:10 PM
Quo -- yes, Riedel commented on it every other column or so. It got to be a running joke about the confetti of white pieces of paper falling out of people's Playbills and I don't know how many people I knew who got burned by her no-shows. She subsequently fessed up about her poor attendance, claiming she had been ill during the run. When she did the Weill show with Cerveris, she started to do the same and apparently Hal Prince put his foot down and told her show up or ship out. She showed up
- Donna Murphy's Wonderful Town Feb 3, 02:13:53 PM
Donna Murphy was notorious for the number of missed performances in Wonderful Town. I saw her in late preview and thought she "got through" it all right, but I want someone to more than "get through" a show when they're carrying the lead. My only first-hand knowledge of Rosalind Russell in WT was the television version done in 1959, which I treasure. I don't think anyone has mentioned that there are some clips of Russell from the original Broadway version in 1953 -- no sound, but the clilps
- William Tabbert Feb 1, 03:55:43 PM
Josh Logan was notorious for coming up with some excuse to have guys take their shirts off -- think Mr. Roberts, South Pacific, Picnic, All American, and several others. I imagine that they'd be taking more than their shirts off if Logan was around today.
- William Tabbert Jan 30, 10:07:23 PM
Per Theatre World, Volumn 31, "William Tabbert, 53, actor and lyric tenor, died of a heart attack October 1974 while rehearsing for a nightclub act in NYC." I read Logan's book zillions of years ago, but don't recall his saying that. I may be wrong.
- Valerie Harper as Tallulah in LOOPED - Thoughts and/or Buzz? Jan 27, 02:50:56 PM
Looped appeal to the gay community? Dahling, how could you possibly think there'd be any interest there?
- Which would you choose to see - Behanding or Looped Jan 27, 10:38:33 AM
I don't envy you having to make that choice -- both are high up on my list, for different reasons. However, putting aside all other considerations, if you're doing AF that night, probably Behanding would be a better balance if you're going to do two shows in one day. But I'd hate to have to be in your position.
- Valerie Harper as Tallulah in LOOPED - Thoughts and/or Buzz? Jan 27, 09:01:59 AM
I am SO looking forward to this. Although I never saw Ms. B in person, I remember her radio show back in the early 50's -- I didn't really understand a lot of what she was saying, but my parents were howling and that voice hooked me from the time I was four. A pretty good sampling of the Bankhead persona is captured on the Lucy episode she did in the late 50's. The listing in the ABC's of the NYT reads, "Valerie Harper as Tallulah Bankhead in Looped," so I'll finally have a Playbill of a show
- February at Broadway Jan 26, 11:32:17 AM
I would say LOOPED for sure, if you have any famliarlity with Tallulah Bankhead -- she was one of the true camp idols of all time, a fabulous character with a one-of-a-kind persona that many have imitated but none have achieved. The word on Valerie Harper in the role has been good on the road, so give this one a shot. The audience alone will be worth the price of admission!
- How could Joe Schmo get tickets to an opening night performance? Jan 26, 11:27:15 AM
I don't think you'll have a problem getting an opening night ticket for this show. You may not get the best seat in the house, but at least you can say you were there. This show has a relatively low profile so far, so you might even cop a great seat. Good luck!!!!!

- A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE Reviews Jan 25, 02:36:22 PM
Michelle, I wouldn't be panicking too much about getting tickets for View. It's the dead of winter and will be until the end of February, so you've got plenty of time. Out-of-towners who visit NYC only occasionally prefer the blockbuster musicals to serious dramas unless there's some superstar involved. If a Johnny Depp, a Brad Pitt or a (shudder) Tom Cruise were involved, tickets would be scarce commodities, good reviews or not. But a well-received revival of a serious play at this
- A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE Reviews Jan 25, 11:26:46 AM
RE: Schreiber and the Tony. Has anyone noticed that View will be departing the Cort "just in time" to make way for Fences, which is supposed to play at the same theatre. Anyone think that one of them will end up in another theatre?
- Goodbye to Bye Bye Birdie!!! Jan 23, 07:38:04 AM
As Bette Davis said in Of Human Bondage, "Good riddance to bad rubbish."
- PRESENT LAUGHTER Reviews Jan 22, 04:51:53 PM
The New York Post didn't particularly like it, although it gave the set a rave review. Duhhhhh -- when was the set for a Noel Coward play the determining factor as to whether the production was good or not? Style, timing, pitch, line delivery -- those are what count when doing a Coward play. It's fine to have a good set, but the joy of Coward is in the writing and the delivery, NOT the scenic design.
- come fly with me discount? Jan 19, 10:37:30 PM
And as Fly With Me doen't have any "names" in the cast, a discount is almost a sure thing. I'm really looking forward to it so I can see Selya -- he's one of my idols.
- The Magic Show with Doug Henning Jan 19, 10:34:27 PM
JRypka, I know that Magic Show was different than Merlin. The original question was if anyone had seen Merlin (which also had Doug Hemmings) and I was responding to that.
- The Magic Show with Doug Henning Jan 19, 03:48:34 PM
I saw Merlin -- it was a disaster. I felt sorriest for poor Chita Rivera being stuck in it -- what a waste of talent!
