In November 1988, Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, with his wife and dancer, Ludmilla Nerubashenko founded the first private classical ballet company in Russia.The first foreign tour by the company took place in Seoul in 1989 and since then, the company has toured Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Japan, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Portugal, Finland, Singapore, USA, Estonia, Cyprus, Belgium, Luxembourg, Lithuania and of course Russia.Since its creation, the Moscow City Ballet has created 10 ballets and performed more than 20,000 shows.The aesthetics of the company are based on the Russian ballet tradition, the virtuoso technique of the dancers as well as the profound dramatics of each role. The dancers within the company come from the major dance schools in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev and Perm. Some have danced with other prestigious companies but wanted to find new artistic experiences and therefore joined the Moscow City Ballet.Victor Smirnov-Golovanov, prestigious soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet, student of the great masters of ballet such as Balanchine, Robbins, Lavrovski and others, choreographed for theatres in Moscow, Kiev, Novossibirsk, Tachkent etc. His experience as a designer and his activities as artistic director of the Odessa Opera spurred him to create his own company initially called, "Jeunes Etoiles" [Young Stars]. Global stars of ballet, such as Nadiezda Pavlova, Youri Posochov, Tatiana Terechova, Ludmilla Semieniaka participated in performances organised by Victor Smirnov-Golovanov.

Despite all the difficulties of his time, his huge artistic talent and his perseverance made it possible for him to overcome the risks related to creating a private artistic company yet keeping his maxim: old traditions (Petipa, Ivanov, Gorski) – new stars!

Victor Smirnov-Golovanov died in Moscow on 22 April 2013.We must not lose the artistic heritage, and must seek continue his work, are the watchwords of the company. The master is gone but his work lives on through his students!Victor's last creation "Romeo and Juliet" was dedicated to his wife Ludmilla who faithfully accompanied him in his life and work and who, today, continues the work they started together.Born in 1955 in Odessa, after having completed her ballet training at the Kiev Conservatory, Ludmilla became a soloist at the Odessa Opera. In 1988, Ludmilla became a soloist and teacher at the Moscow City Ballet and from 1993 was principal coach for the company. Since 22 April 2013 she has taken on the role of artistic director.
