The Howard Community College (HCC) Theatre Program presents the winner of eight Tony Awards, including best musical, "Spring Awakening," over two weekends March 9-18. Directed by Theatre Department Coordinator Jenny Male, "Spring Awakening" will feature current HCC students and guest artists, who will bring this award-winning musical to life for audiences.

"Spring Awakening" explores the lives of young people in late 19th century Germany who are coming of age with their identity, sexuality, and dreams of the future. Their world is plunged into chaos when they discover the adults in their lives want to keep them in a bubble of conformity with little knowledge or free thinking. Their thoughts and feelings explode in a wash of rock and roll, dance, and songs.

Many of the characters portrayed in the show are based on real people living in Germany in the 1880s and 1890s. "Spring Awakening" allows their stories to be heard in a new, exciting way, while the use of a revolving turntable allows for amazing staging opportunities. This is the first fully-produced musical by the HCC Theatre Program.

The Associated Press called "Spring Awakening" "electrifying and exhilarating. A sheer triumph," while Newsday said the show was "revelatory and moving. An original all its own."

Performances are March 9-11 and 17-18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 12 at 2:30 p.m. at HCC's Smith Theatre, which is located in the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA), 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland. There will be a free post-show discussion following Sunday, March 12's performance.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, faculty, staff and military. For tickets, visithowardcc.edu/box office or call 443-518-1500. The box office will also be open 90 minutes prior to each show time andTuesday-Friday, 12-6 p.m.

About The Theatre Program

The Howard Community College theatre program is committed to helping students develop their individual creativity and artistic viewpoint. Students are provided a solid foundation of theory and technique, exposure to aesthetic and cultural diversity, collaborative skills, practical experience on and off the stage, and ample opportunities for performance. The learning process is strengthened by faculty who are known both as excellent teachers and practicing artists. The theatre program presents a variety of performances showcasing students throughout the year, including a fall play production, staged readings, the popular spring Shakespeare birthday celebration performance, and an annual collaboration of faculty, students, alumni, and guest artists performing scenes, songs, and stage combat.
