It is fitting that F. Scott Black should have his name in lights on the Mainstage at the Community College of Baltimore County, Essex. The F. Scott Black Theatre will be formally dedicated tomorrow. And this Friday, June 9, when the curtain goes up on the 45th season of Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre, F. Scott Black's name will be there in lights! Black will also be there in person as the director for the season opener - "Arsenic and Old Lace."

Black is a theatre icon at CCBC and in Baltimore. He started teaching at then-Essex Community College in the Speech and Theatre Department in 1972. Through the years, he worked to develop and expand the college's offerings and was instrumental in achieving national accreditation for the CCBC Theatre program. Black founded and became the artistic director of the Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre from 1972-2002. Cockpit is the oldest summer theatre in Maryland. In 1999, he established and directed the college's Travel Studies program and a year later became the department head for the Speech, Mass Communication and Theatre department. >From 2007 until his retirement in 2013, Black served as academic dean of the School of Liberal Arts. During his tenure at CCBC and after he has shown unwavering dedication, philanthropic support and commitment to student success, academic excellence, and the advancement of the Performing Arts at CCBC. He and his husband, Dwayne Berezny, have established an endowment to help support these initiatives.

Baltimore natives and the Arts community outside of CCBC know him as a founding member of the Baltimore Theatre Alliance, and the owner and operator of the F. Scott Black Dinner Theater inTowson, which served as a community staple from 1981-2001, served up some of the finest entertainment and fantastic food in the area.

In his 40-plus years at CCBC and in the Baltimore community, Scott directed, taught and mentored hundreds of young artists and students who have gone on to shape theatre in this region and beyond. Many of Scott's former students and young artists have founded theatres, act and direct professionally, advocate for the arts, and teach young people all over the United States.

The funding campaign to match a philanthropic challenge gift from the Romadka family is still underway to support the renaming of the theatre.
