BWW's Jeff Davis to Make Directorial Debut With SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS, Runs 6/19-28 Photos BWW's Jeff Davis to Make Directorial Debut With SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS, Runs 6/19-28
(4/24/2014) - Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks is a touching and human comedy about a formidable retired woman, Lily Harrison, who hires an acerbic dance instructor, Michael Minetti, to give her private dance lessons -one per week for six weeks- in her gulf-front condo in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida. What begins as an antagonistic relationship blossoms into an intimate friendship as these two people from very different backgrounds reveal their secrets, fears, and joys while dancing the Swing, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha-Cha, and Contemporary Dance. Michael and Lily learn to overcome their outward differences and discover an unlikely but profound connection. By the final lesson, Lily shares with Michael her most closely guarded secret and he shares with her his greatest gifts, his loyalty and compassion. A comedy with music and dance, the play also addresses the serious issues of ageism and intolerance.

BWW Reviews: Few Spicy Performers Can't Save Mild IN THE HEIGHTS Photos BWW Reviews: Few Spicy Performers Can't Save Mild IN THE HEIGHTS
(4/17/2014) - There's a great Hollywood myth about the film version of The Color Purple. The beloved classic about African-American women was directed by the very male and very white Steven Spielberg, but he allegedly almost quit the project days before shooting was to begin. According to legend, Steven called the film's producer, Quincy Jones, a few days before shooting to voice his doubts about the project. 'I don't think I should direct this,' Steven said. 'I'm a white Jewish guy from California. What do I know about African-American women from the South?' To this, Quincy replied, 'Steven, are you an alien? Because you directed E.T., and I think that was pretty good.' Spielberg stayed on as director, and the film was a huge success that earned 11 Oscar nominations.
