BWW Reviews: THE KING AND I at Zach Theatre is a Sumptuous, Opulent Production of an American Musical Theatre Classic Photos BWW Reviews: THE KING AND I at Zach Theatre is a Sumptuous, Opulent Production of an American Musical Theatre Classic
(9/21/2014) - Rodgers & Hammerstein are, to me, the comfort food of musical theatre. Of all their shows, THE KING AND I holds up the best some 65 years on. It avoids the saccharine sweetness and didactic qualities of some of their other works. The musical is based on the 1944 novel 'Anna and the King of Siam' by Margaret Landon, which was derived from Anna Leonowens memoirs of her time as governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860's. The musical tells the story of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. Their relationship is marked by conflict as well as by a love that neither can admit to. Premiering on March 29 in 1951, THE KING AND I ran nearly three years, and, at the time, was the fourth longest-running Broadway musical in history.

(9/22/2014) - There may be quite a few ideas and institutions that bond mankind around the world, but there's one that's more powerful than the rest. It's not politics. It's not religion. It's music.

BWW Reviews: MacTheatre Has Definitely Got It and Flaunts It in THE PRODUCERS Photos BWW Reviews: MacTheatre Has Definitely Got It and Flaunts It in THE PRODUCERS
(9/19/2014) - "I really, really miss high school theatre." This was the first thought I had as I entered, sat and watched, and exited McCallum Fine Arts Academy' production of The Producers. Because I first-handedly know how much work- and how much fun- it is to spend countless hours rehearsing (need to interject that these dedicated students spent their summer rehearsing for this show), running the show countless times, and making several costume and set changes, showstopping numbers, and putting on a beloved Broadway musical on their high school stage look easy. And MacTheatre pulled it off.

(9/18/2014) - Meet the feisty females of Eden Falls, Georgia, six women who decide to shake up their lives. Hilarity abounds in this rollicking Southern comedy that takes place in SPA-DEE-DAH!, an abandoned church-turned-day-spa where this group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. After the loss of a dear friend, the women realize time is precious, and if they're going to change their lives and achieve their dreams, they have to get on it now! But Sugar Lee, their high-spirited, determined leader, has her hands full keeping the women motivated.
