The Long Center for the Performing Arts

Founded in 1983 by famed violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, the Menuhin Competition is the world's leading international violin competition for players up to the age of 21. Held every two years in a different host city, the event combines a violin competition with a festival of concerts and events. In 2014, The University of Texas Butler School of Music hosts the first-ever competition in North America. Texas Performing Arts is proud to include the opening and gala performances of the Menuhin Competition as part of our 2013-2014 season. The Menuhin Competition Austin 2014 kicks off its 10-day Festival with an opening concert featuring The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gerhardt Zimmermann. For this program, the UTSO, one of the top university orchestras in the nation, performs the Mendelssohn Double Concerto for Violin and Piano with violinist Ilya Gringolts and faculty pianist Anton Nel. Both soloists are serving as jurors for the competition.

TARTUFFE
Mary Moody Northern Theatre
2/13-2/23/2014
Tartuffe by Moliere Translated by Ranjit Bolt February 13 - 23, 2014 Thursday - Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2 PM. Directed by David M. Long Masquerading as a man of God, Tartuffe has wormed his way into the affections and household of a rich merchant, Orgon, with pantomime piety and counterfeit zeal. So comprehensively has he hoodwinked Orgon that he looks set to succeed in driving away the son, marrying the daughter, seducing the wife and imprisoning his host. Moliere's classic satire was denounced on its first performance as a sacrilegious outrage and banned from further public view. This contemporary adaptation proves that hypocrisy never takes a holiday. "Astoundingly delightful." - New York Post

TIED BY FAITH. BOUND BY FREEDOM. The Civil War has ended. Into the chaos of war-torn Richmond, comes a wounded Jewish Confederate officer who finds his home in ruins and abandoned, save for two former slaves, who have waited for the family's return. As the three men long for signs of life to return to the country, they wrestle with their shared past, the bitter irony of Jewish slave-owning and the reality of the new world in which they find themselves. The pain that each man endures is not soothed and deep-buried secrets from the past refuse to be hidden as the play comes to its shocking climax. The Austin premiere of Matthew Lopez's award-winning drama about redemption and forgiveness, about the lasting scars of slavery, and the responsibility that comes with freedom. This very funny, yet very touching play focuses on the lives of four men who live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of a sincere, but increasingly despairing, social worker. Filled with humor, the play is also marked by the compassion and understanding with which it peers into the half-lit world of its handicapped protagonists.

Now Playing Onstage in Austin - Week of 2/16/2014 WICKED
Bass Concert Hall
2/19-3/9/2014
Back by "Popular" demand. Variety calls WICKED "a cultural phenomenon," and each time it plays Austin, it breaks box office records and sells out in record time. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED is "Broadway's biggest blockbuster" (The New York Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for "the most complete - and completely satisfying - new musical in a long time" (USA Today).
