The Theatre & Performance program at Georgia Southern University kicks off its 2013-2014 season with David Mamet's RACE; A PLAY in the Center for Art & Theatre's Black Box Theatre, running tonight, Sept. 24-Oct. 1.

RACE; A PLAY opens tonight, Sept. 24, and runs through Wednesday, Oct. 1. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. Running time is approximately 75 minutes and has no intermission. The play is recommended for mature audiences because of strong language and sexual content.

Tickets are $5 for students and youth, and $10 for faculty, staff and community members. All seating is general admission. The house opens at 7 p.m., and audience members are encouraged to arrive no later than 7:15 p.m. to ensure good seats. The balcony will serve as overflow seating. Call the Box Office at 912-478-5379 to make reservations.

RACE explores the tension between perception and intent when a law firm of three attorneys, two black and one white, defend a white man charged with a crime against a black woman. Thought-provoking and challenging, the play raises questions about how each of us perceives race in today's world and will leave audiences with more questions than answers. Because of adult subject matter and strong language, the play is recommended for mature audiences. Georgia Southern is featuring post-show discussions on Thursday, September 25 and Wednesday, October 1, starting about ten minutes after the performance.

Theatre & Performance audiences will recognize actors Whitaker Gardner and Tatyana Arrington from last year's production of HAMLET, when they were matched as Claudius and Gertrude. New to the Black Box stage are actors V. Akil Jackson and Harry Hudgins, who round out the cast. Student designers complete the production team with Colin Hancock as scenic designer and Zo Haynes overseeing costumes and lighting design.

Cast members: Tatyana Arrington, Whitaker Gardner, V. Akil Jackson, and Harry Hudgins.
Directed by Lisa L. Abbott, Scenic Design: Colin Hancock, Costume Design: Zo Haynes, Lighting Design: Zo Haynes.

Reservation requests can be left on the Box Office voicemail 24-hours a day. The Box Office is open 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday for ticket purchases and reopens at 6 p.m. on performance days.
