The improv troupe "Dark Side of the Room" started off in 2014 at Dad's Garage as an in-house project for improvisers of color to experiment with new formats geared towards giving voice to the African American experience. The group, composed entirely of African American performers from Dad's Garage, settled on a style where the improvisers riff on popular movies such as Cocktail, Top Gun, and Willy Wonka that are driven primarily by white characters.

Over the course of a long-form improv set, Dark Side of the Room shows what the African American characters were up to. Their improvised stories take the original plots of iconic films and add flair and flavor to them as a way to reclaim African American space in popular culture. What started out as a small project has grown into one of Dad's Garage's most popular regularly scheduled formats.

This May, Dark Side of the Room celebrates their one-year anniversary of performing regularly at Dad's Garage as part of the "Evening With..." series. The performance will include highlights from the best of their special guests, along with a fresh longform improv jam riffing on a new film.

Dark Side of the Room includes Mark Kendall, Cris Gray, Kirsten King, Rickey Boynton, Andre Castenell, and Jon Carr.
