World Music Institute closes out its vibrant, danceable World to Brooklyn series with Grammy-nominated modern salsa fusion band La Clave Secreta at Roulette onSaturday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m. Infusing elements of classical, jazz, funk, and flamenco music into traditional salsa and timba forms, the 12-piece band creates a sophisticated sound full of adventurous arrangements and danceable rhythms.

World to Brooklyn offers festive, social concerts that replicate a dance-party in a specific country, with free "cultural" cocktails, pre-show dance lessons, and great world music followed by a DJ after-party-all for $25.

Led by the Venezuelan multi-instrumentalist Gonzalo Grau, the group adopted the nameLa Clave Secreta (formerly La Timba Loca) after feeling constrained by the expectation to be a strictly salsa or timba band. "It had labeled and limited our music to a specific style and audience," says Grau. "Our music travels beyond the timba standards."

Instead, the group reaches a wide audience of serious listeners and avid dancers alike, melding cultures by way of the band's personnel as well as their musical product. The open-minded approach of La Clave Secreta has led to collaboration with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and performances around the world at festivals such as the "Global Village Festival" in Sydney and the "Benny Moré Festival" in Cuba.
