MAR 9 -- 60 mins., Larry Hassman, "SURPRISE! Happy New Year"Poor Tim, sadly left alone by his "friend" to greet the New Year, is surprised by James, a handsome stranger, seemingly lost, ringing his doorbell by mistake. One thing leads to another and Tim, happily bedded, fantasizes starting the new year with a passionate new love. But reality insinuates - the handsome stranger is a "pay-as-you -go" hooker. Tim's friend Philip returns and James, before leaving to meet his missed client, adroitly reconciles the two who greet the new year happily reconciled and in each others arms. 30 mins., Dennis Rager, "Diagnosis, Debt or Dead?"If you were told that you only have a short time to live, what would you do? "Diagnosis, Debt or Death" is the story of Shelly Dana, who receives such a diagnosis and decides to live whatever days she has left on earth in a life and adventure exploring trip around the world. But this hedonistic medicine is too good. Shelly begins to feel better than she has ever felt. With deaths shadow no longer hanging over her, Shelly returns home to a huge stack of credit card bills from her life-changing adventure. The play centers around the subsequent face-off in the medical office of Dr. James Craig, the physician who gave Shelly her death sentence. Was it just a case of mistaken identity? See "Diagnosis: Debt or Death" for the dramatic conclusion to Shelly's life-changing escape from death March 23 -- 2 hours, Mervyn Kaufman,"The Love Life" is a wry send-up of a longstanding tradition, in some parts of our land, that empowers a man to take on multiple marriage partners legally.

Merv Kaufman is a long-ago graduate of the UCLA Theater Arts Dept. He came to New York to establish a career in publishing-books and magazines- but ultimately refocused his talents on playwriting. He's enjoyed seeing some of his work read at various sites, in New York and elsewhere, and looks forward to someday seeing his work actually performed. By real actors!

NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT at LIU POST

Here's an opportunity to submit unproduced full-length plays to a New Play Development Workshop that's happening this summer at Long Island University's Post campus. Playwrights receive a stipend to participate, which means that they must attend at least one rehearsal per week out on Long Island. The plays will be produced as a staged reading, acted and directed by MFA in Theatre candidates. The educational goal is to have these students interact with a professional playwright in their midst.

Plays are needed for the workshop that begins May 16 and ends June 19.

The Theatre program at LIU Post is committed to the creation of new works for theatre. Along with presenting revivals of classical and contemporary plays and musicals, the department presents a New Play Festival, which allows undergraduate actors to work on new plays from professional writers, and a New Play Development Workshop with our MFA students, who get to work with new plays every summer.

Professional playwrights who wish to participate in these events are welcome to submit unproduced new plays and musicals for consideration following the guidelines below. A stipend will be paid for participation. While we cannot usually provide accommodation for playwrights, we are most interested in writers who can actively participate in the development process in person on our campus. This might mean coming to rehearsal once a week, or participating online, or some other active involvement with their play's development.

Plays developed with the undergraduates in the New Play Festival will have a professional director. Playwrights do not have to be physically present or directly involved if they choose not to be, though we welcome their participation. Undergraduate actors will be cast to work in the New Play Festival.

Plays developed during the summer New Play Development Workshop with our graduate students will have a MFA student director. Playwrights must be physically present and directly involved, as part of what we're teaching is how to work with a playwright in the room. MFA in Acting students will be cast in the summer New Play Festival Workshop.
