Tonight, December 7th, 2013 8 pm - Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Burlington, VT

7 pm - Musically Speaking

Principal Guest Conductor Anthony Princiotti's orchestral showcase concert begins with the overture to Mozart's most successful opera, The Magic Flute, a blend of low comedy, fairytale fantasy, and Masonic idealism. Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony, written just three months after the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, is bright and transparent, reflecting the joyous atmosphere from which it sprang. The composer called it "a merry little piece" - quite a contrast to the heroic scale of his previous two symphonies! The program concludes with an audience favorite, Tchaikovsky's exultant Fifth Symphony.
