As reported by BroadwayWorld, theatre and film fans alike are mourning the passing of Alan Rickman at age 69.

While he gained world fame in such film roles as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise and Hans Gruber in the 1988 hit DIE HARD, Rickman made his mark on Broadway playing a trio of darkly sexual characters, predators in varying degrees, that both thrilled and repulsed audiences.

He first came to Broadway a virtual unknown, starring with Lindsay Duncan in the 1986 transfer of the Royal Shakespeare Company's mounting of Christopher Hampton's LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES, playing the ruthless and irresistible Valmont.

Rickman returned to Broadway in 2002 with another London transfer, a smashing revival of Noel Coward's PRIVATE LIVES. Once again teamed up with Lindsay Duncan, their performances bubbled over with fizzy chemistry.
Rickman was a full-fledged movie star when he made his last Broadway appearance in 2011. Streets jammed with his fans after every performance of Theresa Rebeck's SEMINAR, where he starred as a famous novelist who gets intimately involved with the young writers in his fiction class.
