URINETOWN & THIS MAY HURT A BIT Set for St. James Theatre's Spring 2014 Season

David Gilmore, Artistic Director, has confirmd details of the upcoming season of main house productions at the St. James Theatre. The 312 seat main house is an exciting alternative to the West End, staging a varied programme of quality plays and musicals and featuring excellent sightlines from every seat. The intimate studio space incorporates the very best of both established and emerging talent in the worlds of cabaret, music, comedy and theatre. The informal bar and brasserie on the ground floor, and the elegant Carrara restaurant on the first floor cater for all pre and post-theatre tastes. Earlier this month, the St. James Theatre was one of only seven theatres shortlisted for the My Theatre Matters! Most Welcoming Theatre Award out of over 225 theatre venues across the country.

SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE - UNTIL 09 NOVEMBER 2013

Trevor Nunn's critically acclaimed production of Ingmar Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage (5* Sunday Telegraph, 4* Evening Standard/ Daily Telegraph/ Independent/ Sunday Times/ Sunday Express/ Times / Time Out) will complete its run at the St. James Theatre on 09 November 2013, as planned. The adaptation of the script is by Joanna Murray-Smith, original designs were by Rob Jones, and these have been adapted for the St. James Theatre production by Al Turner; original lighting was by Paul Pyant, adapted by Derek Anderson and fight direction is by Terry King.

The cast is Olivia Williams (Marianne), Mark Bazeley (Johan), Shane Attwooll (Peter/Arne), Melanie Jessop (Mrs. Palm/Mrs Jacobi) and Aislinn Sands (Katrina/Eva). Scenes from a Marriage is produced by St. James Productions.

A portrait of extraordinary intimacy and a searchingly honest and moving love story. We follow Johan and Marianne from their seemingly perfect happy marriage through betrayal and loss to warring contenders in divorce and beyond.

LONDON PREMIERE OF IN THE NEXT ROOM or the vibrator play - 13 NOVEMBER 2013 - 04 JANUARY 2014

Peter Huntley and Just for Laughs Theatricals, in association with Theatre Royal Bath Productions present the Ustinov Studio production of Sarah Ruhl's Tony nominated IN THE NEXT ROOM or the vibrator play. The production will run at the St. James Theatre from 13 November 2013 to 04 January 2014, with press night on 21 November.

The director is Laurence Boswell, design is by Simon Kenny, lighting by Ben Ormerod and sound by Fergus O'Hare.

The cast is Madeline Appiah (Elizabeth), Edward Bennet (Leo Irving), Natalie Casey (Catherine Givings), Jason Hughes (Dr. Givings), Flora Montgomery (Sabrina Daldry), Owen Oakeshott (Mr. Daldry) and Sarah Woodward (Annie).

Late 19th Century New York State. A time of great innovation and social change. Whilst enthusiasm grows amongst the well-to-do for the new electric light bulb, Dr Givings has been working on his own strange electrical device. His aim is to treat female hysteria, but his first patient emerges from her first session glowing and keen to return...

IN THE NEXT ROOM or the vibrator play is a provocative, touching and entertaining story about sex and intimacy.

THE SNAIL AND THE WHALE - 10 DECEMBER 2013 - 5 JANUARY 2014

Tall Stories' latest collaboration with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, The Snail and the Whale, will play at the St. James Theatre from Tuesday 10 December 2013 to Sunday 5 January 2014, following a national tour. Press performances will take place on Thursday 12 December at 12pm, Friday 13 December at 12pm and Saturday 14 December at 1.30pm.

Based on the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, which won the 2004 Early Years award, the 2005 Blue Peter award and the 2007 Giverny award; the production is directed and co-written by Toby Mitchell, with Olivia Jacobs as creative producer and co-writer. Music is by Richard Heacock, design by Isla Shaw and lighting design by James Whiteside. The cast is Patrick Bridgman (Dad/ Whale), Rhiannon Wallace (Daughter/ Snail) and Ellen Chivers (Narrator/ Viola).

Created in Tall Stories' unique style; the show combines storytelling, live music and lots of laughs, in a show for everyone aged four and up. All music and sound effects are created live on stage by an electric viola player with an effects pedal.

A tiny snail longs to see the world, so she hitches a lift on the tail of a humpback whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, experiencing sharks and penguins, icebergs and volcanoes. But when the whale gets beached, how will the tiny snail save him?

THE UK PREMIERE OF MULTI TONY AWARD WINNING - URINETOWN THE MUSICAL - 22 FEBRUARY - 3 MAY 2014

URINETOWN The Musical, directed by Jamie Lloyd, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, will run at the St. James Theatre from 22 February until 3 May 2014, with opening night on 11 March 2014.

The cast for URINETOWN The Musical includes Katie Bernstein (Little Becky Two Shoes/Mrs Millennium), Cory English (Old Man Strong/Hot Blades Harry), Richard Fleeshman (Bobby Strong), Madeleine Harland (Soupy Sue/Cladwell's Secretary), Rosanna Hyland (Hope Cladwell), Julie Jupp (Old Woman/Josephine Strong), Mark Meadows (Senator Fipp), Joel Montague (Male Swing 1), Jo Napthine (Female Swing 2), Jenna Russell (Penelope Pennywise), Matthew Seadon-Young (Robbie The Stockfish/UGC Executive 1) and Jonathan Slinger (Officer Lockstock).

The role of Caldwell B. Cladwell and further casting will be announced shortly.

URINETOWN The Musical ran on Broadway to great acclaim from 2001 until 2004 and was nominated for ten Tony Awards, and won for Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction. In addition, it also won three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, two Obie Awards and the Drama League Award for Best Musical.

THIS MAY HURT A BIT - 12 MAY - 21 JUNE 2014

Out of Joint return to the St. James Theatre following their acclaimed 25th anniversary production of Our Country's Good, with Stella Feehily's ambitious new play about the NHS - This May Hurt A Bit. Exploring the UK's best-loved and most fiercely debated institution, the production will run from 12 May to 21 June 2014, following a UK tour, with press night on 19 May 2014 at 7.30pm. A bold initiative devised by Out of Joint in partnership with producer Karl Sydow means that a total of 1500 seats were put on sale for under £15 including five hundred £5 seats.

The production is directed by Out of Joint Artistic Director Max Stafford-Clark, whose experience of a major stroke in 2006, plus years of subsequent treatment, inspired playwright Stella Feehily (Max's wife) to research and write the play.

A month after stating "we will stop the top-down reorganisation of the NHS that has got in the way of patient care", the government launched the biggest top-down reorganisation the service had seen in its 65-year history. Stella Feehily's new play explores one family's journey through the digestive system of the NHS, and asks: what is the prognosis?
