URBAN TANGO TRIO

Latin-Grammy winner Octavio Brunetti on piano; Machiko Ozawa, former concertmaster of Orquesta Sinfonica Sinaloa de Las Artes, on violin; and acclaimed composer/arranger Pedro Giraudo on bass. Together, these three awesomely talented virtuoso musicians capture the passion and excitement of Argentine tango in a repertoire ranging from traditional favorites, to contemporary interpretations. They have dazzled audiences in New York, Washington DC, South Carolina, Virginia, and in Tokyo, Japan, with an upcoming tour to Japan this August. This appearance at Joe’s Pub will debut their new repertoire, which they will feature on their tour and will be the basis of their next CD.

Ode to Old Flames harkens back to a time when vinyl forced artists to make the most of the limited amount of time they had to make a good musical impression. John Bibbs uses less time than many of his contemporaries, but he also manages to say a whole lot more. Highly Recommended!

Greg Diamond has recently emerged at the forefront of a new generation of contemporary Latin jazz guitarists and composers in the New York jazz scene. He has performed at numerous notable venues and clubs in the New York City area such as the Blue Note, Iridium, Smalls and Zinc Bar as well at numerous international festivals including: The Barranquijazz Festival, The Teatro Libre Jazz Festival, The Jazz al Parque Festival, and The Universidad de Los Andes Jazz Festival in Colombia. Other festival presentations include the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca, Spain, and the First Annual Nublu Jazz Festival in New York City. In 2007, he was a semi-finalist in the Gibson International Jazz Guitar Competition hosted by the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

Greg's is making his debut at Joe's Pub celebrating ‘Conduit’ his new CD release on Dot Time Records. This is his sophomore album as bandleader. Greg's vibrant Latin-infused compositions converge with a dynamic all-star band for a highly entertaining set.

David Arthur Brown was born in Los Angeles on June 19th, 1967. He was a runaway who later became obsessed with low budget travel and poetry. He traveled through Asia, South America and Europe for many years. Along the way he learned to play the saxophone. He played sax with Beck from 1997 through 2000. During that time he learned how to play the guitar and began writing songs and singing.

David formed Brazzaville in Los Angeles, in late 1997. He searched tirelessly for a name that would convey the mood of the new band. One beautiful morning in the Hollywood Hills, he was reading a story in the L.A. Times about the civil war in Congo. The dateline of the story ready BRAZZAVILLE Reuters. The word jumped out at him and he knew he had found the name for the new band. It was only later that he discovered what an amazing man, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, the man the city had been named after, had been.

Tristano says: “The record "idiosynkrasia" is the fruit of a quest for an idiosyncratic language that is somewhere between acoustic and electronic, a quest that spans time and space, and I want to bring the piano into the 21st century. My ambition is to provide the piano with a new identity, because it is often associated with classical music and viewed as an instrument of the past, while I genuinely see it as an instrument of the future.”

With one foot in the Classical music and the other in Electronic Music networks, Francesco Tristano found his balance by executing acrobatic splits between two antagonistic genres, which makes him one the most unique and surprising profiles of the decade.

As a Classical pianist, he attended some of the best music schools in the world, performed many critically acclaimed interpretations of Frescobaldi, Bach, Ravel or Berio and received awards in many prestigious competitions. Barely over 25, he has already played at some of the world's largest auditoriums, such as New York's Carnegie Hall, Berlin's Philharmonie or Paris' Cité de la Musique.

Pianist and composer Michel Reis and multi-reedist Aaron Kruziki met while studying at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and have been playing together as a duo for many years. Their first album entitled “Fairytale” was recorded in 2008 for WPR Jazz and the duo is currently working on a new recording project to be released in 2013.

Most of the compositions are written by Michel Reis, but they merely serve as a point of departure for a very elaborate musical collaboration between both musicians and allow for a lot of interaction and spontaneity. The large sound palette of this acoustic duo is in part due to Aaron Kruziki's use of several wind instruments such as the soprano saxophone, the alto saxophone, the clarinet, the flute, the duduk and his own voice.

After earning applause as one of Southern California’s most talented young artists, Marina was personally signed to Chop Shop Records by label founder Alexandra Patsavas, famed music supervisor for such films and TV shows as Twilight, Gossip Girl, and Grey's Anatomy.

Marina’s new album, Felony Flats, marks a major leap forward for the Portland, Oregon-based singer/songwriter. The self-produced album sees Marina joined by some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest musicians, including guitarist Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Telekinesis), bassist Jeff Bond, drummer Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Mister Heavenly), and Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley, who contributes additional piano and guitars. A carefully crafted collection of twinkling pop gems, Felony Flats is built around Marina’s deft melodic sensibility and wryly humorous lyrical point of view. The record is strongly heartfelt, thanks in part to the tenderness of Marina’s vocal style and the personal nature of her lyrics. Highlighted by songs such as “Notice Me” and “You Are Invisible,” Felony Flats is both richly textured and deeply personal, a remarkable musical journey chronicling loss and love in all their many permutations.

Specializing as the leading live practitioners of hobo glam for at least a month of Sundays, Minerva Lions are comprised of at least four individuals whose names happen to be Tim Kuhl, Grey McMurray, Joseph McCaffrey, & Jared Samuel. individually they have played with many musical heavyweights and even Mohammed Ahli. together they have 1 EP, entitled "Great strides, Priestess & Queen." they are available for all your functions, be they private or other. as of this summer they are working on a full-length record as well as new ways to sneak into your backyard to use your swimming pool (at night.)

SIDI TOURE

Sidi Touré made his first guitar as a child, constructing it from his wooden writing slate in the ancient town of Gao, Mali. Once the heart of the Songhai empire and burial place of its Askia kings, the town rests between the Niger and the encroaching ocean of sand known as the Sahara Desert. The Songhai empire was the last of the great empires of the Sahel, reaching its zenith under Soni Alibert (Sunni Ali) in the mid 400’s.

Sidi Touré was born here in 1959, but to be born a Touré, a noble family who trace their lineage directly from the Askia kings, carries a significance and onus of a past that reaches directly into the present. Like another Malian noble turned singer, Salif Keita, Sidi Touré faced a conflict between the inexorable pull of music and the expectations of family and society. Touré’s family have been sung about, and sung to, by traditional griots for centuries, but until a small boy challenged the rules, the Touré’s did not sing!

Sidi has created a sound which both captures and challenges his roots. While the music and rhythms remain authentically Songhai, moving from the translucent swaying Takamba to the trance inducing Holley , his lyrics revleal an observant and critical mind. His songs draw attention to issues not usually addressed by singers from such ancient traditions. Sidi’s music is modern, bending tradition not unlike Tinariwen (they share common rhythms like Takamba: the songhai and the tamasheq are neighbors) and his guitar playing and scales cross into western folk and blues not unlike Ali Farke Touré (who is also songhai). Sidi is a captivating performer whose skills and songs shine in any context.

Nath Ann will be performing a solo set of songs from 1967-71 thematically spanning teen delinquent anti-authoritarian murder, mental institution imprisonment, Women's Lib, anti-marriage retaliation, sex work in New Orleans, outlaw lovers, bootlegging rackets, class conscious incest, stillborn suicide, and beyond!

Described as a "glitter saint" by the Village Voice and "heavenly" by the New York Times, Nath Ann has performed regularly at Joe's Pub with Justin VivIan Bond, Amber Martin, and Scream Along With Billy, and has had solo shows at Wild Project (A Village Voice Choice) and Dixon Place.

Ryan Raftery - KING OF THE JEWS!
