UNNECESSARY FARCE, MARVELOUS WONDERETTES Sequel & More Set for Chenango River Theatre's 2014 Season

Season tickets start as low as $65 to see all four of the shows in Chenango River Theatre's 2014 season. CRT is the area's only non-profit theatre company authorized to feature professional actors in every show and brings in national caliber actors from all over the country to rehearse and perform here in the Southern Tier. Opening the season from May 30 - June 22 is Paul Slade Smith's big comedy Unnecessary Farce. Mix two cops, three crooks and eight doors in two seedy motel rooms and you've got one of the most successful comedies in the country since its debut in 2006. A very modern and American take on classic British farce - it's in the company of American classics like Noises Off and The Foreigner, with slamming doors, pants falling down, mistaken identities and an accountant who keeps taking off her clothes. Co-produced by Pete & Karen Raymond and The Daniels Family.

Next up is the sequel to one of Chenango River Theatre's biggest hits ever, The Marvelous Wonderettes, which sold out every performance in 2010. The sequel, titled Marvelous Wonderettes, Caps & Gowns, runs July 10 - Aug. 3 and opens on a Thursday instead of the traditional Friday just to get one more performance scheduled. Only season ticket holders can make reservations for this show until May 21, when individual tickets to Caps & Gowns will go on sale. In this sequel, which showcases great hits of the late 50's and 60's, Act 1 takes the Wonderettes through their high school graduation, while Act 2 jumps ahead 10 years where the girls perform to celebrate Missy's marriage. Songs featured include Rock Around the Clock, At the Hop, Dancing in the Street, What a Wonderful World, Good Lovin' and River Deep, Mountain High. Co-produced by NBT Bank and Davidson Fox & Co.

From Aug. 22 - Sept. 14, CRT will bring to life the area premiere of the poignant, brilliant and perpetually hilarious comedy Heroes, a comedy that won the 2006 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in London. Set in 1959, somewhere in France in a home for retired WWI veterans, the three heroes in this story are hatching a plan to escape their assisted living facility (and the head nun running it). Part of their plan might be one last chance to cavort after the young French girls they remember, presuming they can stay awake long enough to complete the plan. Co-produced by The Raymond Corporation and Jim & Debby Dyal.

Closing the season from Oct. 3 - 19 is Mr. Hart & Mr. Brown. Author Bruce Graham offered CRT this new piece after seeing CRT's production last season of his play The Outgoing Tide. CRT will present only the second ever production of this sensational new play, based loosely on real historical figures and set in the wilds of Nebraska in the 1920's during Prohibition. Two Gun Hart is the only law for 300 miles. When a Dusenberg-driving alleged antique dealer with a mysterious past shows up looking for the legendary sheriff, young journalist Ambrose Healey smells a story. But what cost would there be to write it? A wildly entertaining mystery of a play about freedom of the press, good and evil, and the myth of the Old West.

Also featured during the season will be a continuation of CRT's One Night Stand Series - single night one person shows. National touring actor-comedian-entertainer-musician Chris "Red" Blisset, who starred in both Pump Boys & Dinettes and Ring of Fire, The Music of Johnny Cash, will be premiering his new one man show Chris Blisset: Red-Headed Step Child, based on his stand up comedy, an absurdist biography, true stories and a diverse collection of songs. His performance is Monday, June 16, during the run of Unnecessary Farce, in which Red will be playing the key role of Todd, member of the Scottish mafia. On Monday, Aug. 25, nationally known comedian Kelly Kinsella will return to our stage, following up on her sold out performance last year with her new one person show, How To Do A One Person Show. Lauded by the NYC press, Kelly's new show is a comedic primer on how to do a one person show. Or is it? Tickets for the One Night Stand series are just $12 and go on sale April 7.
