UMS March Events Include Elias String Quartet, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and More

The University Musical Society (UMS) presents two fundraising events and seven incredibly diverse performances this March, ranging from a performance by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to an evening of Qawwali music from Pakistan.

The month opens with a Latin Jazz double bill in the Michigan Theater featuring Detroit's Mack Avenue Records pianist Alfredo Rodri?guez with his trio and a staple from the NYC Cuban music scene, the Pedrito Martinez Group (Friday, March 14). The following day, UMS presents the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time in a decade in Hill Auditorium, performing Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 (Saturday, March 15). Please note that this concert begins at 8:45 pm.

Later in the week, the Elias String Quartet graces Rackham Auditorium for its UMS debut with a program of Debussy, Kurta?g, and Beethoven (Tuesday, March 18). In keeping with the week's theme of UMS debut performances, Tara Erraught, the 26-year-old Irish mezzo-soprano that is taking the opera world by storm, performs in Hill Auditorium (Thursday, March 20). Later in the week, the "emperor of Qawwali," Asif Ali Khan, makes his UMS debut, performing a program of devotional Sufi music from Pakistan in Rackham Auditorium (Friday, March 21).

The following week, New York City Ballet principal dancer Wendy Whelan performs a suite of contemporary duets with four different choreographers in Restless Creature in the Power Center (Tuesday, March 25). The month closes out with a performance by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, performing a range of repertoire including Duke Ellington, Detroit Jazz, and historic New Orleans Jazz in Hill

Auditorium (Sunday, March 30). At this Ford Honors Program concert, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will receive the UMS Distinguished Artist Award.
