Theatre Legend Cy Coleman Passes Away at 75

Cy Coleman, composer extraordinaire passed away on November 18, 2004 at the age of 75. He was honored earlier in the week, reciving the Johnny Mercer Foundation Award at the Rainbow Room. We present those below, as a celebration of his life.

We received the sad and unbelievable news this morning that Mr. Coleman passed away last night. Our hearts go out to his family, and we are very proud that The Actors Fund was able to celebrate his lifes work with him present. He was so thrilled with the concert and the cast that showed up to pay tribute to him, and most especially with the overwhelming response that you and the other members of our audience gave him that night.

On Monday night, November 15, 2004 Cy Coleman was honored by the Johnny Mercer Foundation with an awards presentation, and performance. The evening included a musical tribute featuring: Tony Bennett, Chita Rivera, Brian Stokes Mittchell, Margaret Whiting, Glenn Close, and Kathie Lee Gifford with The Accentuate The Positive Kids.

The Johnny Mercer Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of The Great American Song Book and sponsors "Accentuate the Positive", a program that teaches New York City public school teachers how to include the works of great American songwriters in their curricula; supports the Johnny Mercer/Sundance Institutes for young songwriters and actors and sponsors the work of young songwriters across the country.
