The People Movers Presents CRAWL Tonight in Bushwick

The People Movers, known for creating socially, politically, and culturally relevant works through complex, physical movement, announce the fourth chapter of CRAWL, a new multi-disciplinary, nomadic arts presenting series. Tonight, September 26, 2015, the fourth chapter of the series and the culminating performance of CRAWL's pilot year will take to Brooklyn Desks' new, raw, 10,000 square foot warehouse in Bushwick at 7:30 PM for its debut arts event. The evening will feature immersive dance performances from Dante Brown of Warehouse Dance and Gregory Dolbashian of The Dash Ensemble, as well as interactive music and poetry from E.Oks of Double Ones.

CRAWL events foster and support creative comings-together between artists and audiences. The series demonstrates the skill, creativity, and diversity of the emerging generation of artistic work in NYC, and radically changes the way that art is seen and experienced. "It is important to bring up and coming creators together, and to produce and support artists who are creating thoughtful, relevant work," explains Kate Ladenheim, director of The People Movers and founder of CRAWL. "There is a push from audiences and artists alike to build these creative communities and new models of presentation - CRAWL is an answer to that push."

CRAWL: Chapter 4 will offer an evening of hip-hop inspired, immersive music and dance. Exploring concepts of privilege, systems of oppression, and personal storytelling, these three artists take the audience on a journey from humor to tragedy, maintaining honesty and vulnerability throughout.

Dante Brown, Warehouse Dance: Soapbox (LP) | World Premiere

Using contemporary movement that incorporates modern, jazz and hip-hop sensibilities, Soapbox (LP) investigates how the concept of stealing operates as a cultural tool to maintain imbalanced power dynamics based on race and class in American culture. Using popular music from the 1950's and beyond, this work whimsically addresses the vast range of voices that are deemed important in popular culture through lip-synching, investigative physicality, and humor. Soapbox (LP) questions perspective, value and weight through a formula of satirical and innovative expression.

Gregory Dolbashian, The DASH Ensemble: DASHOW | Re-Stage

Bridging the physical and athletic demands of a dance artist coupled with the depth, bravery, and vulnerability of a theatrical performer, DASHOW is an honest storytelling of the universal experiences of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Aimed at revealing the moments we often seek to hide from the world around us, DASHOW contains moments of humor, intensity, emotion, and vulnerability, all painted with the texture of The DASH's signature contemporary dance style with an urban flair.

E.Oks, Double Ones: Play Pretend | New York Premiere

In a freestyle rap show that infuses jazz and spoken word, main vocalist and poet E. Oks will be accompanied by a 4-piece band for Play Pretend, which confronts the habits that prevent us from exploration. We believe we know ourselves and pretend to know others but what happens when we stop to pay closer attention to the people and things around us? We are introduced to unpredictability that is displayed through a world of sound in this New York Premiere.

This one night only performance will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 7:30 pm. ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Dante Brown | Warehouse Dance is a collaborative group of movement artists under the direction of Dante Brown that aims to generate compelling thematic environments within a process of physical and theoretical inquiry. DB|WD produces work that is approachable, satirical by nature, and physically innovative. Since its founding in 2010, DB|WD has had the opportunity to show work across the country, including Bates College, Columbus Dance Theater, Dixon Place, Gowanus Art and Production, Hillsborough Community College, LaMaMa Moves Festival, Movement Research at the Judson Church, The New Museum, Sam Houston State University, and Triskelion Arts.

Gregory Dolbashian is an internationally renowned choreographer and the Artistic Director of the DASH Ensemble. He is a recipient of The Bessie Schoenberg Residency at The Yard, winner of The Pretty Creatives Competition for Northwest Dance Project, and of The Hubbard Street 2 International Choreographic Competition. Schools, universities, and dance companies across the country have commissioned his highly sought-after work. Most recently, Gregory participated in ABT Principal Daniil Simkin's INTENSIO, collaborating on a work with for members of American Ballet Theatre. In addition to his choreography, Gregory, alongside Loni Landon, is the co­founder of The Playground, a choreographic initiative that was voted 25 to Watch in 2013 by Dance Magazine.

E. Oks (Evan Okun) is a Chicago-based hip-hop artist, musician, and poet. He recently released the "Well Lit LP" - a metaphysical look at American culture through the seven chakras, and is in the middle of a six part series with the Bowery Poetry Club, NYC. Evan has published three hip hop albums, competed in the national collegiate spoken word poetry tournament, and runs a variety of writing workshops for youth ages ten to twenty. He is currently employed by Circles & Ciphers, a Chicago-based restorative justice group that works with court-involved youth through hip-hop.

The People Movers is a contemporary dance company under the direction of Kate Ladenheim that is known for creating socially, politically, and culturally relevant works through complex, physical movement. Ladenheim's choreography has been praised as "stunning... an interplay of oppositions... pure, unbounded physicality meeting intricate, balletic delicacy" (the Dance Enthusiast). The company has been presented at several notable venues across the Northeast. Ladenheim is a 2014-2015 Leimay Fellow at CAVE and the winner of the 2015 Rider University Emerging Choreographer Competition. Ladenheim and her company have enjoyed residencies at The Ballet and Dance Center (Syracuse, NY), The Field (New York, NY), the Pocantico Center (Hudson, NY) and through the White Wave Rising Choreographer Residency Program, and have been commissioned by the Juventas New Music Ensemble. Ladenheim is also the founder of CRAWL, a program of The People Movers, which brings artists of different media together during neighborhood-based arts events in NYC.
