The New School will offer free tours and performances by students from Mannes College The New School for Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and art and design installations by Parsons students to officially open its brand new, state-of-the-art University Center, designed by top architect Roger Duffy of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, located on 5th Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets in Manhattan, at a public open house today, January 25th from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

As part of the grand opening festivities, New School students will give vocal, instrumental and dance performances all afternoon and lead tours throughout the building. Student-designed and produced lighting and sound installations will be displayed at several locations throughout the building. All activities are free and open to the public.

The New School's University Center, a true campus hub located in the heart of the West Village, is a 16-story building that includes nine floors of full-service dormitory housing, seven academic floors with a two-level library, a multi-purpose auditorium featuring New York City's first convertible stage that can be used for Theater Productions, fashion shows and lectures, and has a projected LEED Gold rating.

The centerpiece of the 375,000 square foot University Center, prominently visible from the outside, is the grand staircase connecting all floors and forming convenient landing points throughout the building to promote interaction, communication and collaboration.

Founded in 1919, The New School was born out of principles of academic freedom, tolerance, and experimentation. Committed to social engagement, The New School today remains in the vanguard of innovation in higher education, with more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students challenging the status quo in design and the social sciences, liberal arts, management, the arts and media. The New School welcomes thousands of adult learners annually for continuing education courses and calendar of lectures, screenings, readings and concerts. Through its online learning portals, research institutes and international partnerships, The New School maintains a global presence.

Tours will be held on Saturday, January 25 from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at The New School University Center, located at Fifth Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets in Manhattan. For more information visit www.newschool.edu.
