The Jewish Museum Launches Fall 2015 Family Programs

The Jewish Museum launches its fall 2015 season of family programs wiith a lively array of concerts, art workshops, and more.
The fall line-up includes Sunday concerts by Alison Faith Levy on October 11, The FunkeyMonkeys on October 25, Ralph's World on November 8, Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights on December 20, and Oran Etkin's Timbalooloo on December 25. Also on the schedule are: Family Days on November 15 and December 6; holiday and vacation week drop-in art workshops October 1 and 2 and December 27, 28, 29 & 31; and family art activities every Sunday starting September 13.
In addition, families can visit Archaeology Zone: Discovering Treasures from Playgrounds to Palaces. In this engaging and thoroughly interactive experience, children become archaeologists as they search for clues about ancient and modern objects. Visitors can discover what happens after archaeologists unearth artifacts and bring them back to their labs for in-depth analysis. Children ages 3 through 10 magnify, sketch, and weigh objects from the past and the present, piece together clay fragments, interpret symbols, and dress in costumes. The children's exhibition is open every day except Wednesday and Saturday.

Thursday, October 1 and Friday, October 2DROP-IN ART WORKSHOP: NATURE PRINTS FOR SUKKOT1pm - 4pm
Age 3 and up
Participants can create festive prints using photo-sensitive paper and objects from nature, producing images in the spirit of holiday of Sukkot and inspired by photography on view in the Museum's galleries. Kids will also be able to turn their prints into playful wall decorations. Free with Museum admission

Ages 4 to 10
Each month, children can engage with works of art through activities and gallery tours that focus on themes related to special exhibitions. October 4 - Colorful Characters, with a tour of Becoming Jewish: Warhol's Liz and Marilyn and Unorthodox
November 22 - Imagine the Journey, with a tour of Masterpieces and Curiosities: Alfred Stieglitz's The Steerage
December 13 - Objects the Shine, with a tour of Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey

Alison Faith Levy (formerly "Sippy Alison" of the beloved kids' psychedelic band The Sippy Cups) and her Big Time Tot Rock Band come to the Museum from San Francisco to perform '60s-style tunes from her albums, The Start of Things and World of Wonder.

Ages 5 to 17
Families who have children with developmental and learning disabilities will visit an exhibition with a Museum educator and then create their own works of art. The workshop includes gallery activities, an art project, and snacks. Free with Museum admission

Ages 6 to 10
Drawing inspiration from Andy Warhol and contemporary artists featured in current exhibitions at the Museum, participants will learn printmaking techniques and experiment with color, layering, and shadow to create unique portraits. Families will visit Ralph's World, the musical planet where kids rock out to high-energy tunes by the Grammy-nominated, Chicago-based indie rocker Ralph Covert and his band.

Sunday, November 15 THE POWER OF PICTURES FAMILY DAY
Noon - 4:00pm
Age 3 and up
Kids can design vibrant posters, be photographed in surreal scenes, rock out with the band Lyagushki, and explore the power of the camera to capture the world around us through Russian and English tours of the exhibition, The Power of Pictures: Early Soviet Photography, Early Soviet Film. Free with Museum admission
Sunday, December 6 HANUKKAH FAMILY DAY
Noon - 4:00pm
Age 3 and up
Children can construct sculptural Hanukkah menorahs with funky found objects, dance to the music of ShirLaLa, see the Hanukkah story brought to life through a drawing performance with Jeff Hopkins, and explore the Museum's world-famous collection of Hanukkah lamps. Free with Museum admission
Sunday, December 20 ART WORKSHOP AND GALLERY TOUR:
3D to 2D: Photographic City Scenes

Ages 8 to 12
Participants can explore the process of photographer Vik Muniz and other artists through a gallery tour of the exhibition, Masterpieces & Curiosities: Alfred Stieglitz's The Steerage, and then use found objects, photography, and dramatic lighting to create unique works of art. A simulated archaeological dig is open for families on the second Sunday of each month. Free with Museum admission ADULTS ARE ASKED TO ACCOMPANY THEIR CHILDREN TO ALL PROGRAMS. The Jewish Museum offers a state-of-the-art audio guide for children ages 5 to 12 to its permanent exhibition, Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey. Visitors are able to enjoy the children's audio guide free with Museum admission. The audio guides are sponsored by Bloomberg.
Located on Museum Mile at Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street, the Jewish Museum is one of the world's preeminent institutions devoted to exploring art and Jewish culture from ancient to contemporary, offering intellectually engaging and educational exhibitions and programs for people of all ages and backgrounds. The Museum was established in 1904, when Judge Mayer Sulzberger donated 26 ceremonial objects to The Jewish Theological Seminary as the core of a museum collection.
