The City Theatre Company Proudly Presents Edward Albee's THREE TALL WOMEN

Adding to the 2017 season, The City Theatre is very excited to announce a special stage presentation of Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Three Tall Women. Described as "an extraordinarily brilliant play," this riveting, funny, and thought-provoking examination of women's lives is one of the most successful plays in Modern American Theatre and all too rarely produced in Austin. Artistic Director Andy Berkovsky leads the production with show dates February 17 - March 5.

Earning a Pulitzer Prize and three Best Play awards, Edward Albee has created a masterwork of modern theater. Three Tall Women is a beautiful and enduring examination of loss and our ability to go on in spite of it. Haunting and humorous, it follows the hopes and hardships of three contemporary women, an imperious old matriarch, a duteous housekeeper, and a passionate young lawyer - how they laugh, how they live, and how they love. Representing individual characters, and yet the same "everywoman," these women lay bare the truths of our lives. Albee's frank dialogue portrays aging without sentimentality, and his scenes are charged with wit, pain, and laughter, observing all about forgiveness, reconciliation, and our own fates. He has given theatergoers a reason to rejoice!

Edward Albee burst onto the theatrical scene in the late 1950s with a variety of plays that detailed the agonies and disillusionment of the time. His early plays, The American Dream and The Zoo Story, effectively gave birth to American absurdist drama, a new theatrical movement, and he was labeled as the successor to Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. But, with the surreal nature of his work never far from the surface, Albee's plays, with their intensity, modern themes, and experiments in form, startled critics and audiences alike while changing the landscape of American drama. He is a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize with monumental works including Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, A Delicate Balance, Seascape, Three Tall Women, and The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?. His plays form a body of work that is recognized as unique, uncompromising, controversial, and provocative. Albee describes his work as "an examination of the American Scene, an attack on the substitution of artificial for real values in our society, a condemnation of complacency, cruelty, and emasculation, a stand against the fiction that everything in this slipping land of ours is peachy-keen." Much has been written, and will continue to be, about Edward Albee, who died on September 16, 2016 at the age 88.

Leading the production is Artistic Director Andy Berkovsky, who has assembled the all-star cast of City Theatre stage veterans Judith Laird, Tracy Hurd, and Jesselyn Parks. The City Theatre Company is excited to be celebrating its 11th anniversary season of live theatre entertainment in Austin. CTC is an Austin-based, not-for-profit arts organization and is sponsored in part by the Austin Creative Alliance and the Austin Cultural Arts Division. Founded in 2006, the company has been recognized by the Austin Critics Table Awards, the B. Iden Payne Awards, the Central Texas Excellence in Theatre Awards, Austin Live Theatre, and has twice been voted "Best Theatre Company" by Austin American-Statesman's Austin 360. CTC is dedicated in providing quality theatrical experiences and entertainment for Austin artists and its community and continues the commitment to making productions accessible for everyone.
