The Brevard Music Center (BMC) is pleased to announce that Mark Weinstein has been appointed as the next President of the institution. Weinstein has a distinguished 35-year career in the arts having served as Executive Director of the New York City Opera, General Director of the Pittsburgh Opera, Executive Director of the Washington National Opera, and CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas. Most recently he has worked as a consultant serving performing arts groups in Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh.
"Mr. Weinstein has a wealth of experience and a proven track record in fundraising, marketing, and management," stated Falls Harris, chair of the Music Center's Search Committee. "He joins the Brevard Music Center at a seminal moment in our history and is ready to lead this wonderful institution to achieve its fullest potential."
As the Music Center's next President, Weinstein will work with the BMC Board of Trustees and Artistic Director Keith Lockhart to develop long-term vision and strategy for the 77-year-old summer institute and festival.
Lockhart shared his enthusiasm for the announcement, saying, "I feel confident that, in Mark Weinstein, I will have a strong partner, fully capable of and invested in supporting the mission of the Brevard Music Center."
Weinstein will replace Larry Fogdall, who has served as interim President of the Brevard Music Center since 2011. Fogdall, a former BMC board member, volunteered to guide the Music Center until a permanent President was selected. "Larry Fogdall stepped up to help lead Brevard through a transitional period when we needed solid leadership," said Phillip Jerome, Chair of the BMC Board of Trustees, "he truly personifies servant leadership."
Weinstein expressed his excitement in anticipation of joining an organization with a strong educational mission and a proven record of training and inspiring future arts leaders. "The Brevard Music Center has a tremendous history and a very bright future. I am delighted to be invited to join Keith Lockhart, and to work together with the board, staff, faculty, and volunteers on behalf of this important organization."
The Brevard Music Center celebrated the end of its 2013 Summer Festival on Sunday, August 4. Weinstein will join BMC beginning August 26, 2013.
HISTORY
The Brevard Music Center originated in 1936 as a summer music camp at Davidson College. James Christian Pfohl, the Music Center's founder and first Artistic Director, moved his operation to Queens College in Charlotte for the summer of 1943, then to the current location in 1944. Pfohl added a festival of concerts at the end of the 1946 session. Over time the camp became an institute, and the festival came to run the full length of the summer season.
In 2013 Brevard Music Center currently enrolls more than 400 students from nearly every state, plus students from Europe, Asia, and South America. Sixty-five professional musicians, representing major orchestras and distinguished music schools, comprise the artist faculty. Students, faculty, and staff all reside on the 180-acre wooded campus in western North Carolina. The Brevard Music Center has emerged as one of America's premier summer training programs for young musicians.
