American Lyric Theater's popular series of public libretto readings, The Living Libretto, continues today, April 2nd at The National Opera Center. Featuring guest actors from Broadway and off-Broadway, these events are the culminating readings of extensive libretto workshops conducted for the new operas currently being written by ALT Resident Artists. Each reading includes a wine and cheese reception with the featured artists, and is followed by a discussion with the artists moderated by American Lyric Theater's Producing Artistic Director, Lawrence Edelson.

The Living Libretto: Opera in Eden will feature libretto readings of four one-act operas being written by writing teams completing their first-year in the Composer Librettist Development Program. The evening will include original works by librettists Rob Handel, EM Lewis, Jerome A. Parker and Niloufar Talebi, who have been working in collaboration with composers Kamala Sankaram, Evan Meier, Elizabeth Lim and Clarice Assad.

ABOUT OPERA IN EDEN
All of the operas featured as part Opera in Eden event are derived from an assignment designed by ALT's faculty mentor Mark Adamo, in which writing teams in the Composer Librettist Development Program are provided with an outline that is very loosely based on the story of Adam and Eve, but with many missing pieces - a sort of operatic 'MadLibs' project. The artists are asked to fill in the blanks, make distinct choices about their takes on the story, and realize their visions in an operatic context. Throughout this one-act project, composers and librettists are challenged to rethink assumptions, justify their choices, and find their own voices as they create a piece that is both dramatically riveting and musically engaging.

SAVE THE DATE: A concert of the four complete one-act operas will be presented by ALT at Symphony Space on Monday June 16th, 2014!
