Religion as a powerful impulse in human existence plays a paradoxical role in society as it both contributes significantly in shaping the spiritual, socio-political and economic lives of millions of people and also acts as a source of conflict. Religion is closely intertwined with culture and custom of people. It can be very important in establishing peace and finding resolution in and between communities. Author Thaddeus Byimui Umaru reveals how the sad experience of interreligious conflict in Northern Nigeria challenges the claim of Islam and Christianity to be religions of peace in his new publication, Christian-Muslim Dialogue In Northern Nigeria.

The author's concern and interest in peace-building leads him to write this book. He cites that Christian-Muslim dialogue and engagement with politics is fundamental in critically addressing issues of violent conflicts in Northern Nigeria. He also stresses that theology (religion) can make significant contribution to a process of sustained peace-building endeavors. This book explores the influence of religion in the lives of the people and in the unity of a country. It shows an in-depth study of Christians and Muslims, with focus on how ethnicity, politics and economic deprivation affect the dynamics of the relationship between the two faith communities.

The thrust of this book is on dialogue and negotiations which are necessary in all aspects of human life and society. It critically analyzes a conflict situation in a particular territory, offering suggestions for a peace process which can be adopted and applied in other circumstances. Focusing on a particular conflict situation, it highlights the interplay between ethnicity, politics and religion and at the same time, it argues for theological engagement with politics for a process of peace.

Highly enlightening and very insightful, Christian-Muslim Dialogue In Northern Nigeria will widen the views of the readers about the conflicts of religion and inspire them to do everything that it takes to contribute to peace-building.
