Tangent Theatre Company announces the six plays to be featured in their NEWvember New Plays Festival – a showcase of original works to be held at the Carpenter Shop Theater, their intimate 50-seat performance space (Nov. 8 -11, 2012). In association with AboutFACE Ireland, Tangent's NEWvember Play Festival will present the six selected plays over a four-day weekend, via rehearsed readings and featuring established actors and directors bringing these works to life. With over 300 submissions received this year, this event has grown significantly since last year – with plays submitted from New York City to California, Ireland to Israel.
The six selected plays are:
1) Love/Sick by
John Cariani: A series of love stories - some gone wrong and others gone right - explore romance in the suburban jungle. Cariani is a Tony-nominated actor and a playwright, best known for his role as
Julian Beck Law & Order and for his play, Almost, Maine, which premiered at Portland Stage Company in 2004, opened Off-Broadway in 2006, and is now one of the most frequently produced plays in the world.
2) Prediction by Michael De Vito; In 1935, a family of German Jews escapes the Nazis aboard a freighter bound for Cuba. De Vito holds a Masters in English Literature from Brooklyn College and currently teaches High School English in Westchester. His plays have been produced around the country, including New York's Fringe Festival, Boomerang Theater, The Playwrights Group and Emerging Artists Theater.
3) Comes a Faery by James McLindon; A cantankerous Irish fairy may or may not have escaped from a favorite storybook to keep a lonely child company…or something darker. A graduate of Harvard Law School, McLindon is a
Dramatists Guild Fellow in New York, whose plays have been developed at the O'Neill National Playwright's Conference, the Humana Festival, the New Repertory Theater in Boston, Irish Repertory Theatre in New York, and at theaters and festivals all over the country.
4) The Widow of Tom's Hill by Aleks Merilo: In 1918, a young sailor and widow from opposite sides of a military quarantine engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. Merilo is an award-winning playwright from Palo Alto, CA whose plays have received numerous productions, including the
Pasadena Playhouse, Urban Stages New York, the Pittsburgh New Work Festival and
The Old Globe in San Diego.
5) How the Dog Runs by
Dan O'Neil: A young couple intends to celebrate their engagement and meet her family, but instead find themselves in the midst of an imminent death at a lakeside cabin. O'Neil is an award winning writer for stage and screen, and holds a B.A. in performance from the University of Minnesota and an MFA in dramatic writing from
Carnegie Mellon University. His works have been developed or produced at Allbright College, the Kennedy Center American Theater and the Great Plains Theater festival, among numerous others. He is a 2011-12 Playwright's Center Core Apprentice.
6) Green River by Rachel White: Edith must choose between life in her defunct mining town or a chance with Charlie, a lonely drifter. White, a Louisville native, earned her MFA in playwriting from the New School for Drama. She has had workshops and productions at the New School for Drama, the American Globe Theatre, the Midtown Inter
National Theatre Festival and the
Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA. She currently teaches English and Drama at Spalding University in Louisville.
Playwrights McLindon, O'Neil and DeVito are from New York City and will be attending the festiv
Al. White, whose play Broken Wing appeared in last year's NEWvember festival, will be traveling from Kentucky, as will Cariani from New England. (The playwrights will take part in audience Q+As.). Merilo, from California, is unable to attend but will be sent written audience feedback.
