TOSOS Presents Lavender Songs; A Queer Cabaret In Weimar Berlin

TOSOS (The Other Side of Silence) is proud to present the return of Jeremy Lawrence's award-winning solo show, Lavender Songs; A Queer Cabaret In Weimar Berlin directed by Jason Jacobs. The original production was produced by TOSOS in 2008 at the Duplex for which it won a Backstage Bistro Award.

In Lavender Songs; A Queer Cabaret In Weimar Berlin, "Tante Fritzy," a famous cabaret artiste, of Berlin Weimar Cabaret, takes the audience on a wild and racy ride through her gender-bender world, singing her favorite songs of the day.

The show is based on an evening created by Alan Lareau for the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. in conjunction with the exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945.

The songs featured in the show were all originally written or performed by queer artists in Weimar era Berlin with English lyrics by Jeremy Lawrence.

Featured music includes Lothar Brühne, Richard Fall, Friedrich Hollaender, Horst Platen, Rudolph Nelson, Ernst Sennhofer, and Mischa Spoliansky. The original German texts were written by Bruno Balz, Raimund Dannberg, Willy Hagen, Friedrich Hollaender, Fritz Löhner-Beda, Marcellus Schiffer, Kurt Schwabach, and Kurt Tucholsky.

Lavender Songs; A Queer Cabaret In Weimar Berlin is running in repertory with Rebel Boy Fireworks, written by Byron Loyd and Susan Morse, directed by Mark Finley, and performed by Byron Loyd. More info is available at www.tososnyc.org.

In 1974, Off-Off Broadway veteran Doric Wilson, cabaret star Billy Blackwell and director Peter dell Valle, started the first professional gay theatre company in NYC. It was called The Other Side of Silence; TOSOS for short. In 2002, directors Mark Finley and Barry Childs and playwright Wilson resurrected the company as TOSOS II, dedicating it to an honest and open exploration of the life experience and cultural sensibility of the LGBT community and to preserving and promoting our literary past in a determined effort to keep our theatrical heritage alive.
