According to Deadline, the sequel to this year's hit horror flick THE PURGE, with returning writer/director James DeMonaco, has received a June 20, 2014 release from Universal.

The team that produced THE PURGE -- Jason Blum (Blumhouse) and Universal with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and Sebastien Lemercier -- will also be returning for the sequel.

THE PURGE 2 is also set up to benefit from California's Film and Television Tax Credit program, which would cover up to 25 percent of the film's budget as long as the funds were spent in the state of California and pending an audit and several other parameters.

THE PURGE (2013) starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as a husband and wife engulfed in the madness of a Lawless night -- the one night of the year in a future America when the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity, including murder, is legal. The movie was a box office hit, taking in $34 million in its opening weekend.

DeMonaco has also written and directed Little New York, and written for the TV series Crash and The Kill Point, as well as the movies Skinwalkers, Hate, The Negotiator and Jack.
