Variety reports that a new stage musical based on the TV series The Love Boat is aiming for a 2014 opening in Las Vegas. THE LOVE BOATS -- which carries the same title as Jeraldine Saunders' original, risqué '70s book -- is still searching for a creative team.

The Love Boat TV show ran from 1977 to 1986 on ABC and starred Gavin MacLeod as the captain of the cruise liner Pacific Princess, whose passengers and crew became wrapped up in a series of comedic and romantic intrigues.

The musical will reportedly draw its songs from the years during which the original show aired.

Real-life cruise director Saunders is producing alongside Kevin Jacobsen's Jacobsen International. David Jacobsen is executive producer.
