Stritch, Tisch To Receive Town Hall's Friend of the Arts Award 10/17

The Town Hall, New York City's landmark concert venue (123 West 43rd Street), will honor Tony ® and Emmy ® Award winning theatre legend Elaine Stritch, (who is currently starring in A Little Night Music) and Merryl H. Tisch, (Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents) with The Town Hall 'Friend of the Arts' Award on Sunday, October 17th, 2010. The award is presented annually to individuals in recognition and appreciation for their abiding interest in the development, enrichment and support of the arts.

Elaine Stritch is currently appearing on Broadway as Madame Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. Born in Detroit, Ms. Stritch studied at the New School in New York City and began her career in musical comedy on Broadway. She went from standing by for Ethel Merman in Call Me Madam to her Tony® nominated performance in the revival of Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance. Other Broadway credits include Angel in the Wings, Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Bus Stop, Goldilocks, Sail Away (New York and London), Company, Showboat and most recently in concert at Carnegie Hall (to celebrate Noel Coward's centennial), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Other stage credits include the concert version of both Follies and Company at Lincoln Center and in A.R. Gurney's Love Letters with Jason Robards and Endgame at BAM. Ms. Stritch made her film debut in the 1957 remake of A Farewell To Arms. She co-starred in the 1977 film Providence and the award-winning BBC television series Two's Company. Other film credits include Cocoon: The Return; Woody Allen's September and Small Time Crooks; Out To Sea with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, Krippendorf's Tribe with Richard Dreyfuss, An Unexpected Wife with Stockard Channing and Stephen Collins, Autumn in New York with Richard Gere and Winona Ryder, Monster-in-Law with Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez, and Romance and Cigarettes with James Gandolfini and Susan Sarandon. Nominated for an Emmy® Award for her performance in the mini-series An Inconvenient Woman, Ms. Stritch later won the Emmy® Award for her recurring role on Law & Order. She received a 2007 Emmy ® Award & 2010 Emmy ® nomination for her guest starring role as Colleen Donaghy. Ms. Stritch won a Tony ®Award and two Drama Desk Awards for the Broadway production of Elaine Stritch At Liberty. In 2005, Elaine made her New York cabaret debut with her critically-acclaimed show Elaine Stritch: At Home at the Carlyle and returned the following year with an all new program entitled Elaine Stritch: At Home at the Carlyle...Again. She returned to the Café Carlyle in January of this year with her all new cabaret show, Elaine Stritch Singin' Sondheim ... One Song At A Time.

MERRYL H. TISCH was appointed to the New York State Board of Regents on April 1, 1996, and re-elected to five year terms on April 1, 2001 and April 1, 2006. She was elected Vice Chancellor by her colleagues effective April 1, 2007 and was elected Chancellor by her colleagues effective April 1, 2009. Chancellor Tisch brings to her appointment many years of experience in the fields of education, community service and philanthropy. Chancellor Tisch is chairperson of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. With an annual budget of $100 million, Met Council has gained national recognition for its work in the areas of youth and family services, housing, poverty programs and neighborhood preservation. Previously, she served as chairperson of the Mr Sinai Children's Center Foundation. Chancellor Tisch serves on the executive committees of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the Citizens Budget Commission. Additionally, she serves on the board of The Trust for Cultural Resources of the City of New York, The Graduate School of Education's Board of Overseers at the University of Pennsylvania, Learning Leaders and the Sesame Workshop. From 1977 to 184, Chancellor Tisch taught first-graders at New York City's Ramaz School at the B'nai Jeshurun School. She received a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A. in Education from New York University and an Ed.D from Teacher's College, Columbia University.
The Gala will take place on Sunday, October 17 at 5:45PM at the Princeton Club of New York. Tickets are $500 each and include a ticket to the Broadway Cabaret Festival's Broadway Originals concert at 3PM at The Town Hall. Broadway Originals will feature Tony Award® nominees Christiane Noll (Ragtime), Stephanie D'Abruzzo and John Tartaglia (Avenue Q), joined by the legendary Jo Sullivan Loesser (The Most Happy Fella) and more, reprising songs they introduced either in the original Broadway production or revival that have lit up the Great White Way these past 50 years.

The Town Hall "Friends of the Arts" Award is presented annually to individuals in recognition and appreciation of their interest in the development, enrichment and support of the arts. Established in 1981, the award has been given to distinguished actors, musicians, business leaders and legislators. Pas recipients include such luminaries as Jacques d'Amboise, Beverly Sills, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Helen Hayes, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Andrea Marcovicci, Jane Alexander, Eli Wallach, Sheldon Harnick, Wendy Wasserstein, Theodore Bikel, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, Marilyn Horne, and Gerald Schoenfeld.
