St. James Studio to Present a Series of Jazz Concerts This Summer

The St. James Studio is delighted to host four talented and creative female jazz stylists over four Saturdays in May and June 2014, presented by JBGB Events. Between them they will treat audiences to a wealth of musical styles such as jazz and tango with a Parisian twist; smooth and sophisticated jazz, folk and blues; Brazilian bossa nova and swinging, finger clicking jazz.

GABRIELLE DUCOMBLE

PARISIAN STYLE JAZZ AND TANGO

Saturday 10 May at 8pm

With Dan Teper on accordion & piano, Richard Jones on violin, Nicolas Meier on guitar, Nick Kacal on bass and Saleem Raman on drums.

Singing in English and French, Gabrielle Ducomble is a fast rising star of the UK Jazz scene. She brings a blend of Gallic charm and sophistication to her performances of Parisian style jazz and tango. With elegant vocals and emotional punch, Gabrielle puts a fresh spin on iconic chansons by Edith Piaf, Michel Legrand, Serge Gainsbourg and Astor Piazolla.

Gabrielle reached the final of French Pop Idol in 2003 and went on to train at the Guildhall School of Music. In 2011 Gabrielle released a well acclaimed debut jazz album and in 2012 completed a wide-scale UK tour.

JACQUI DANKWORTH

SMOOTH SOPHISTICATION

Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK. She draws on her jazz, folk, soul and blues influences as well as her sensitivity as a song writer and lyricist to enthral audiences in a manner described as 'Incomparable' by The Times.

GEORGIA MANCIO

BRAZILIAN BOSSA NOVA

Saturday 7 June at 8pm

Accompanied by reed player Mark Crooks, John Pearce on piano, Colin Oxley on guitar, Dave Chamberlain on bass and Dave Ohm on drums.

Award-winning Georgia Mancio, one of the UK's most original and inventive new artists, presents Salud a Tom Jobim, her tribute to the remarkable talent of the Brazilian Bossa Nova maestro Antonio Carlos 'Tom' Jobim, composer of Girl from Ipanema. Georgia has played several residencies at Ronnie Scots, produced four albums and worked with the likes of Alan Broadbent, Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, Ian Shaw, Liane Carroll, Jason Rebello, Gwilym Simcock and Bobby Wellins.

TINA MAY

EFFERVESCENT SWINGING JAZZ

Saturday 21 June at 8pm

Accompanied by Chris Ingham on piano, Arnie Somogyi on bass and George Double on drums.

Tina May will play the final concert in the Jazz Divas series. Her enthusiasm for the creative invention of jazz, her wonderful improvisational skills, and her playful bilingual and 'franglais' songs make her one of the world's most in demand jazz artists. Tina studied at University College, Cardiff, where she was first infused with the jazz bug. She went on to expand her music studies and experiences with an extended time in Paris where she met Rory Bremner, and together their revue and musical sketches took them to the Edinburgh Fringe in Midnight Excess.
