Spicy Witch Productions Presents 2017 Reigning Women Season!

Spicy Witch Productions - the feminist collective behind the 80s-style horror/comedy Bonesetter: A Tragislasher and the burlesque romp The C*nt - is proud to present the world premiere of Could This Meeting Have Been an Email by 2017 Spicy Witch Writer-in-Residence, Kristin Slaney. Could This Meeting Have Been an Email is running in repertory with the strikingly relevant Mary Stuart by Friedrich Schiller, the play from which Could This Meeting Have Been an Email is adapted. An ensemble cast will tackle both plays this April 21-30. Together, these two pieces will examine women in positions of power, and the way our society has responded to them over centuries.

Ms. Slaney's adaptation reimagines Schiller's Mary Stuart as an office comedy. Britain's historic queens are transported into a modern web of corporate intrigue weighed down by slowly cracking glass ceilings. Buoyed by Slaney's distinctive, zany humor, this play negotiates our fractured journey from The Feminine Mystique to Sheryl Sandberg, leaving us with the hilariously timely travails of women on the verge of an office takeover. Pairing Could This Meeting Have Been an Email with its source material, Mary Stuart, allows audiences to investigate the timely questions of when - if ever - and where - if anywhere - we are ready to have women take control.

Spicy Witch's exciting new version of Mary Stuart, expertly adapted for this performance by Spicy Witch's Programming Director, Phoebe Brooks, brings the audience to 1587, when Mary Stuart has been imprisoned for far too long. She's plotting to escape, but her jail keeper also happens to be her cousin, the Queen of England. Pitted against each other by male advisers, the Queens struggle against the pervasive myth that women must cut one another down in order to succeed. Spicy Witch's fresh take on the piece jumps into the political intrigue of dueling female monarchs, fighting for their place in a world that is not yet ready to make space for both of them.

Both plays are directed by Phoebe Brooks. The ensemble repertory cast features Meghan Blakeman, Olivia Jampol, Sam Ogilvie, Jonathon Ryan, Dan Selinger, Pearl Shin, Nicolas Vasilios Pappas, and Kimberlee Walker.

Spicy Witch Productions explores gender and identity through the pairing of classical and contemporary plays in repertory. Dedicated to creating roles for women on and offstage, SWP aims to help close the gender gap in theater and to use the conversation between classical and contemporary text to initiate a dialogue and be a catalyst for social change. Could This Meeting Have Been an Email runs April 21 (followed by an opening night party), April 25, April 27, and April 29 at 8pm and April 22 and April 30 at 2pm. Mary Stuart runs April 22, April 26, and April 28 at 8pm and April 23 and April 29 at 2pm.
