The Skidmore College Department of Theater is pleased to announce its Fall 2014 black box production, DANCING AT LUGHNASA, by Brian Friel. This production is directed by Marie Glotzbach. Performances are today, October 16-22, 2014. All shows are in the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater at 8:00pm, except for a Sunday matinee at 2:00pm.

Synopsis: DANICING AT LUGHNASA explores the fragile harmony among five grown sisters in rural northern Ireland in 1936 juxtaposed against the realities of political and religious shifts and the oncoming industrial revolution. Reflected through the memory of Michael, the illegitimate son of one of the sisters, playwright Brian Friel reveals undercurrents of desire and longing, which he interweaves with motifs of music, dancing, and a traditional pagan festival. Cutting between Michael's adult and seven-year-old selves, Friel takes us back to the Ireland of Michael's childhood and tries to come to terms with the changes in both family dynamics and Irish culture. On this gauzy screen of memory, caring family ties and nostalgia filter together like a pattern of light and shading in a woodland glen.

About The Skidmore College Department of Theater: The Skidmore Theater Department is a pre-professional program that offers students the opportunity to pursue the serious study of the theater arts within a liberal arts setting. Courses within the department afford training in the basic demands of the discipline-physical and vocal control, technique in acting and directing, technical and design skills-as well as the opportunity for advanced study, practical production experience, study abroad, and off-campus internships. The college liberal arts requirements help the student to understand the moral, intellectual, and political context in which any artist practices.
