Variety reports that ITV wants judge Simon Cowell to return to the UK version of The X Factor for its upcoming season.

The network hopes to include the appearance of the former American Idol judge in its ongoing negotiations with Cowell's Syco production company. The return of the snippy Brit would ensure a ratings boost for the singing competition. Last year's finale episode delivered the lowest audience since 2006.

Cowell ended his tenure on the show in 2010 in order to turn his attention on "X Factor USA," which airs on the FOX network. He continues to act as a judge on "Britain's Got Talent, which continues to deliver strong ratings for the channel.

Max Clifford, Cowell's PR spokesman told The Guardian: "Obviously, everybody to do with the show wants Simon because he gives it an extra quality, we understand that, but with his commitments over there [in the U.S.] he simply can't be in two places at once."
