SATELLITE COLLECTIVE announces SATELLITE FILM ORIGINALS
June 26, 6-8pm
Bowery Arts and Sciences
308 Bowery, New York, NY 10012
Satellite Film Originals is an evening of original film and video created in collaboration with Satellite choreographers, composers and artists. For the first time Satellite will premiere a full program of film, video and original scores in partnership with Bowery Arts and Sciences. Tickets are free; rsvp in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org.
In a few short seasons Satellite Collective has created a body of short film, video and original film scores in collaboration with composers and choreographers, poets and writers. Satellite Film Originals will feature "Twin Star Event" and "Edie Leaves Twice" the first and second parts of a multi-year trilogy of films in collaboration with resident Film Maker Lora Robertson, with composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone, and librettos by Kevin Draper. Scores for the films are by Ellis, and Stelth Ulvang of The Lumineers.
FIRST IN A SERIES OF EVENTS LEADING TO THE PREMIERE OF "NARCISSUS" - AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Satellite Film Originals is the first event in a series leading to the premiere of "Narcissus" - an immersive experience inspired by Ballet Russes. This season, Satellite produces a series of showings, events and surprises, leading to the Spring 2018 premiere of their new large scale collaborative work under Artistic Director Kevin Draper.
"Film often drives the core visual approach in our works," says Draper, "It challenges the rhythms of the music and movement. Film gives us a chance to introduce competitive art into the movement space - as well as an allegorical dimension."
Draper explains Satellite's commitment to film: "Satellite films are story driven, produced from the same librettos as our music and dance works. This is a chance to use one of the more allegorical art forms we use - and we are experimenting with film in some very minimalist ways that tie to other large scale architectural interventions underway in other parts of the county. This Summer, we've begun our shoots for our upcoming production of Narcissus - we're in the Rockaways, combining old urban infrastructure and the shoreline - you'll see it in new short film, but also embedded deeply in our upcoming production."
"Satellite Collective aims to open up the stage to diverse artistic practice, producing alternate channels for performance to envelope the audience-expressing the theatrical and choreographic gesture, sound, décor, film, stagecraft and storytelling into a total artwork." - New York Observer
"NARCISSUS" PREMIERES IN 2018
The team creating this immersive event will be led by Daniel Applebaum, NYCB (Director), Devin Alberda, NYCB (Ballet Director), Marika Anderson, NYCB (Branding), Brandon Stirling Baker (Lighting), Kevin Draper (Architect), Lora Robertson (Filmmaker) and Aaron Severini, NYCB/Juilliard (Composer and Music Director).
Daniel Applebaum notes the role of creativity in Satellite's mission. "It's thrilling to watch a talented group of artists with such disparate backgrounds dive into a project and feed off each other's knowledge and perspective. Allowing artists to create within their areas of expertise while encouraging a dialogue across disciplines is core of Satellite Collective's creative process. Satellite fosters such dynamic cross-pollination in pursuit of new artistic perspectives. There is an electricity to our unique brand of collaboration which we will harness in tandem with our respective classical practices to create a cohesive whole in Narcissus."
ABOUT SATELLITE COLLECTIVE
In a few short years Satellite Collective has engaged art forms fearlessly and styled multiple seasons of dance, music, film and word. In 2017, this peculiar, dynamic group will produce for the first time an integrated, evening length work, and fuse their global process into a full length collaborative, immersive event. Live pop and classical music, film, dance, theater and architecture will all be X in an attempt to wow the audience.
Under the leadership of Kevin Draper Satellite has launched young choreographers, composers, film makers, poets and artists with an uncanny sense of timing - they've tapped into an intense scene of NYC artists from New York City Ballet, Juilliard, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Bowery Poetry Club; bridged a global network of artists working in every medium from video games to installation, and fused pop music from members of The Lumineers, San Fermin and the song writing scenes in the Pacific Northwest into arresting short film and stage work. Always, with a stylish and confident manner, always with a vision.
Founded in 2010, Satellite believes in artists collaborating as equals, globally and virtually. We incubate performances, arts exchanges, and publications that allow artists to work together because we believe that is the future.
